Knocking noise

Featured Replies

Does anyone else get a noticeable knocking noise when first starting the car (petrol vrs) and revving a bit? It seems to go away once the car is fully warmed up. Its definitely not the soundaktor!!!

That sounds like a trip to the dealer, my little 1.4 makes no knocking noise at or just after start up.

My 1.4 (manual) makes knocking (or rattle) noise, when engine is cold and running in idle or below 1000rpm. But it seems that this noise came from gearbox or clutch because when I press clutch pedal down, this noise dissapear. One notice more, this nois came only when gearbox is in neutral position, when I am driving everything looks OK.

My petrol vRS certainly doesn't, and I'd worry more than a bit if it did. Depending on the knock frequency it might be a faulty tappet or cam chain (I think it's a chain not a belt on this model) and certainly not something trivial. I'd recommend a dealer visit. If they say "they all do that Sir" or something similar, get them to put it in writing tohold against them when you return with a dead engine. Sorry to sound alarmist, but it's not a good sign.

In line with the above post this noise does go away when foot is on the clutch. Given you need foot on clutch to start and with the stop/start tech it's not very often it's running idle in neutral. It also goes away once warmed up. Visit to dealer or not???

If something doesn't sound right to you for peace of mind and a professional opinion I would take it back to the dealer.

I have also found (especially when cold) that the gearbox is a little 'clunky' - anyone else found this?

1.4 tsi manual gearbox, at first startup after more than 6 hours there is a noise coming from the gearbox area, it is audible when the clutch pedal is free and the idle is normal , under 800. If i rev a little the noise is gone, if i press the clutch the noise is gone. After a few meters in any gear , then left on neutral the noise is gone. My opinion is that the gearbox oil is at minimum. These gearboxes are filled by the rear light sensor because of the angle they are installed. Anyone went to the dealer for warranty?
