That would be great save me the match and petrol

Flush out heater matrix first, then if not blocked, remove the engine thermostat (under the alternator) and stick your finger in the hole to check that the water pump impeller is not loose on its shaft, or broken. VAG water pumps are notorious for this fault, even when fairly new. At this time of year, a 1.9 PD will not overheat with a defective water pump unless it is worked very hard. You need the pump to get enough hot water through the heater matrix though, as it's high up and connected by narrow bore pipes.

Fit a new thermostat and "O" ring - OE parts are the only ones which fit properly. Finally bleed the heater if necessary, by pulling the heater hose partly off the stub at the bulkhead to reveal the vent hole. Once vented, the hole is covered by the hose. Sometimes it helps to raise the header tank (leave all the pipes on) whilst venting with the engine running. I have not found these engines difficult to vent - even after a water pump change, the heater usually vents itself after a run if everything else is OK.

The coolant temperature senders are unreliable - if the engine (and heater) are actually hot and you get incorrect gauge indication or a CEL, change it. The black-bodied senders are the worst, the green ones a bit better.

Finally, if the heater hoses are hot with a hot engine, suggesting correct water flow around the matrix, there is a problem with the flap control. Either the flap sheds its foam seal (seen any bits of black foam in the car?) or the servo is dead. Dashboard out job...

Thanks dash out I would say then water pump replaced and new vw stat and have done the bleeding with pipe but have rev engine to get it to flow out hole in the top off. pipes are hot going into it and get hot air blowing for a bit after I do bleeding but the heat goes away again then like something is restricting flow but put the hose on the metrix good flow out and put hose oil cooler also to check flow in car also used air and do seem to get good flow . But when I tale water feed pipe off at matrix when car is at idle nearly no flow

Sorry, you need to write in sentences so that I can understand this.

Sorry crap on key board.have changed water pump and the stat already done the head gasket as I was loosing water also.when I bleed system only have small amount off water to the metrix feed pipe.I have to rev engine to get a good flow out off feed pipe and into the metrix . The return pipe out off metrix bleeds ok when I rev engine and I then get heat inside car when I do this. But heat then the heat stops when car goes back to idle revs .temp hand is always around half way .have use airline at oil cooler to make sure I get flow up to the metrix feed and seems ok .must be in the dash area restricting the flow

Seems like the pump is not as good as it should or the pipes are full of sh-t. Also the radiator in cabin may be full of trash.

New pump fitted when trouble started .pump the garden hose to small rad to make sure water is flowing through it.have also used rad flush to wash out system Was small bit off grit in it.

Has the cooling system ever seen anything other than G12 coolant? If non OAT antifreeze (usually blue or green) is mixed with the VAG G12 -> coolant, sludge will be formed which is difficult to shift.

Got new metrix today hope to have it in tomorrow rad is cheap just pity it takes so long to fit so hope this sorts it as then I am beat

Looks like the new rad sorted car thanks for all the help with car might change her but like the car because they are straight forward to work at but what do you buy now

From your messages it isn't clear which bit you changed - the heater matrix in the car or the radiator at the front under the bonnet?

Heater metrix after all .so that's a new pump thermostat a head gasket to get her sorted would off been cheaper buying a petrol can
