Does anyone know the best/ cheapest way to unlock an iPhone 5s?

I've just bought one from my sister in law, but it's locked to her network..

I would have thought it would be a IMEI Unlock on the 5 series iPhones.

 

If the phone is on o2 then they unlock via their website. I think the original owner with the contract needs to do it though.

I unlocked my iPhone 4S, which is on Three's network, quickly and for free recently by filling in a request form on their website.

The network is the easiest way. If its out of contract it is usually free, via SMS or you can ring them up. Once set up you connect to iTunes & job done

If it's in contract they will still probably do it, but charge a fee :(

It was locked to t mobile/ ee. She was entitled to an upgrade on her contract but liked her old phone still.

Depends whether they class it as out of contract.

You can usually get an early upgrade, after about 6 months. But the phone is still in contact until you either upgrade or reach the end of the term of the original contract.

How long has she had it?

Either way just ask them to unlock the phone. If it's in contract ask them how much to do it

The new phone was brand new in its sealed box, but she's had the older one for at least a year

If it's the new one then they will want some spondoolicks :(

You might be better off getting a T-mobile / EE sim only deal and using that in it if that's a possibilty.

Not sure if there are any independent phone shop's that could help, but I'm always wary of them in case they brick it :(

£20 to get it sorted, but it could take 20 days or so as they have to post something..

In the meantime,y existing sim's probably going to stop working..

I had issues with the APN refusing to update after SWMBO's 4s was unlocked, but I found an app that reset it correctly to the new network (GiffGaff).
