Daft really...parking lights

Featured Replies

I recently moved house and to get into my parking space I have to do a big left U'turn (no political jokes please :giggle: )

On leaving the car, no alarm sounded and on locking no lights on that I have noticed.

On two occasions a neighbour has knocked on my door to say my parking lights (2 same side) were on.

As soon as I unlock the car and open the door, the ' lights alarm ' sounded and I just flicked the indicator stalk to centre to rectify.

I'm just wondering..why the delayed reaction for the parking lights to come on once I've walked from the car?

Are you sure it is delayed.   If it is there is a fault,

Have you been trying it again since as though you are putting them on on purpose.

once the keys are out and you open the door, you should hear the warning.

EDIT,

Sorry, that was a vRS i was talking about, but is a Monte any Different.

It is Parking lights you mean isnt it,, One Front Sidelight & one Rear?

My Monte has the warning gong if u've left the lights on

I struggled to make the one side sidelights come on when i tried the first few times (The polo i used to drive did it no problem, so i thought the fabia would too), it just wouldnt come on.

Then the other night i knocked the indicator stalk outside my mates house by accident and they came on. Confused me!

I cant work them out either! Haha.

Do you have to have the key in? Maybe its that delay your speaking of? Im not sure, im going to have a proper play on my drove andtry to sus it out

You have to have the key in the ignition without the engine running, you then put the indicator stalk up or down depending on which side you want lit.

When you take the key out the lights on one side will stay on and a warning sound should be heard.

Ah. Maybe i didnt have the key in the ignition first time. Dont think i had to do that in polo. Cheers!

I can't say exactly what I did, that's the problem, it was only when the knock came at the door I knew anything was going on.

My previous HTP always sounded the warning as soon as I opened the door to exit,

I'll do as George suggests and try it out 'on purpose'

Maybe if I sneak up on it :bandit:

lol,

No i meant sit in the car when next in the car. put down the indicator stalk, exit the car and lock the car,

and then just look at the front and rear light at the side you set the parking light for.

(does a Monte also put one Number plate bulb on like a vRS does.)

No need for stealth, or covert observations,  just does it actually work or not as and when set.?

Ha ha George, just kidding mate, Can't believe I didn't do that before I posted this.

I'm going out shortly to play about and will report back,

Cheers,

Harry.

P.S. Mine is not a Monte, it's the Elegance version of the 1.2 Tsi

Okay, I did the following with results as shown:-

1) unlocked the car, moved the ind., stalk ..No warning sound or park lights. Locked and unlocked.. same .

2)Started engine moved stalk to left position, stopped engine, removed key, opened door, No warning alarm or lights. Tried same with stalk to right but no difference.

3) Started engine, stopped engine, removed key...... Put stalk right or left and when door opened warning sounds and lights come on along with appropriate side number plate light.

It appears if I just stop the engine with the stalk left in indication position it doesn't bring the park lights on or sound alarm. however it appears they come on later (delayed reaction). Whereas if I stop engine and remove key, the parking lights and warning lights work perfectly. Seems odd.

Thank you for that.

When i pull across the road and indicate and stop facing the wrong way against the traffic to go get my paper,

i always get the 'Gong', because the Stalk is still left down indicating to the right.

Then the next time is when Brian has come to tell me i have rear light left on.

hours after i parked and it is now dark, which is why i never noticed it was on. (if it actually was!!!)

& that has been when i am sure the car had no indicator on before stopping/parking so i must have knocked it on getting out of the car.

I must pay attention now to see when, where and how.

One vRS DRL left on when parked really is a stupid looking thing.

& if used on a Public Highway, a driver driving towards it really would wonder what the odd blueish light was.

So purpose served i suppose.

Obviously this is on at the wrong side for being on as a Parking light.

(but i does look like i abandoned it in the middle of the road.)

As you say George, it is strange how you leave the car and then someone tells you hours later your parking light's on?? This is exactly whats been happening to me. Surely something is not just right as the warning should sound as I exit the car.

I am wondering if there is any way the stalk could drop down on it's own but it's highly unlikely as it operates perfectly on the pawls and need to be firmly moved to indicate.

Iv just tried it.

If i unlock the car, move the stalk up (or down) the appropriate sidelight comes on and starts dinging (as the door was still open).

And thats before iv even put the key anywhere near the ignition.

Im not sure, but it seems to work differently in different cars?

Next time someone tells me i left a light on, i will explain how you  get 'Coming Home lights'

for exiting the car and going to your door of a building.

but this one is my 'Going out light',  for getting back to the car.

Someone will then probably ask for  this setting done at the PDI

I'm resurrecting this thread because I had intended to ask about these lights. Mine only work on the driver's side which is ok for parking in two-way roads where you aren't allowed to face oncoming traffic. But no good in one-way streets where you can park on either side. My Roomster worked on both sides so is mine faulty? Also my seatbelt warning only works on the driver's seat when my Roomster worked on both. That seems wrong as a passenger is much more likely to forget the seatbelt than the driver.

If the Left Front & Rear and one rear registration light does not come on when the stalk has been put as though to put on the left indicator then you have a fault.

(Parking Lights are for Parking where there is no street lights as far as i understand, and where you can park either side on a one way street if there is street lighting do you really need 'Parking Lights on'.?)

As to the Seat belt indicator, that is how it is on some cars as far as i know, driver warning only.

George, can't remember what thread we were on when we discussed cornering fog lights and I said I had never seen/heard of them coming on when the car is put in reverse, we'll consider that statement now completely untrue! My 2015 mondeo does it, fecking stupid idea, I'm going backwards!

I won't bother trying to get the fault fixed. Here in Guernsey it's illegal to park at night without 2 matched white pints to the front ant 2 reds to the rear except when in an official parking place.

The legislators obviously never updated now for vehicles with crap batteries and not low amp bulbs.

(Do they sell lots of Booster Packs or Jump Leads in Guernsey?)

No, but blind eyes are often turned. When I first had a car in the 60s, we used to clip lights in the windows, these had a single low powered bulb and a white lense to the front and a red to the rear.

One problem is that what most people call sidelights, and I call parking lights because I believe that dipped headlights should be the minimum on a moving vehicle, as was the law in Germany when I was in the army then they could have very low powered sidelights like VW Beetles had then.

I still have some of those 'Parking Lights', chrome edge to hook on the top of window, and bullet white to front red rear.

(Wind up window time on cars and a Cigarette Lighter that would work without fusing or needing wiggled.)

PS

My daily drive is a 2003 S60 Volvo with Dim Dip Headlights,

except they are not dim they are just Dipped Beam & Sidelights on.
