Columbus problems

Featured Replies

Hi all

I've got myself into a mess with my Coulmbus and need some help.

I was trying to install updated maps and the process failed halfway through, so then I tried to run the format map partition before trying again (see here: http://www.my-gti.com/3374/volkswagen-rns-510-firmware-upgrade-and-information) and got a gateway update error.  The unit is now displaying strange behaviour and the touchscreen isn't working.

Anyway I then tried the gateway recovery error option (also at above link) and it seems to be recognised as a swl disc, but I keep getting the message invalid clamp state when I try to run it. I also get this error whenever I try to load alternative firmware.

The invalid clamp state is apparently due to the fact that the unit is in 12 hour format, not 24 hour format but as my touchscreen isn't working, I can't do this.  Also unfortunately as there is a gateway error, I can't do it via the MFD, nor connect to the unit with VCDS.

So I seemingly need a way to change to the format of the clock without the screen, or to get a fix that completely resets the unit.

Any ideas please?  The one possible thing I did find was this (posted by Josi on this page: http://www.my-gti.com/1986/volkswagen-rns-510-swl-recovery-cd-for-gateway-error-202-or-boot-problems): Try to load 2680 software. As it is factory CD, it will reset everything. After update coding must be performed by VCDS or dealer VAS system to reenable audio and MFD display.

It refers to a factory firmware CD - anyone have a link to factory firmware please?

Thanks

Adam

I think I've got a 'release' version of 381x which might be the same as a factory firmware. It's not a 'beta' version.

I can upload it to my server and send you a download link if you want to try it.

Have you tried disconnecting the battery for a while?

Thanks for this, I knew you would be first to respond! Yes I have tried to disconnect and in fact I can only get the Columbus to boot up if I take it out and reconnect it at the quadlock and I can't turn it off without doing the reverse!

Regarding your offer, I am slightly wary as mine is a version A, and needs the modified version of 3810, which I'm presuming yours isn't?  But it might be a worth a try as a last resort so if you could do that, I'd be most grateful.

I'm so close to be able to fix this, as it can recognise the SWL disc, it just won't do anything as the hour mode is set to 12 hour clock.  I'm now wondering if there is a way to connect it to a PC and adjust it via some kind of manager, or even open it up to set/reset something manually.

That last question sounds like one for Eddie_NL. Might be worth a PM.

My Columbus is a 3T0...A model HW:06 SW27xx IIRC.

Just let me know if you want my firmware.

Thanks Chris, that could be really helpful.  I  will report back...

Latest is I have tried three supposed factory (2660, 2680 and 3810) firmwares with the same results, ie cd recognised as a swl disc but "invalid clamp state, please change hour mode." It is so frustrating!

Anyway I have now removed the unit and emailed Hazzydayz (who appear to be a professional outfit) to see if they can flash the firmware using a pc connection and hence bypass this problem. They offer a postal service which suits me as I am miles away.

Just to complete on this HazzyDayz (http://www.hazzydayz.com/) did an excellent job for me for a reasonable cost (£50+VAT for a firmware reflash) and I am now fully back in business.  I have nothing to do with them but would recommend them 100% as they took the time to discuss the issues and options with me and looked to keep the costs down as well.

Adam

Glad you are sorted.

Out of interest, what other options did they offer you?

Thanks.

They offered a choice of firmwares, and were also prepared to try reflashing first without their diagnosis procedure once they chatted to me about what I had done and tried.  I also had v10 maps loaded for a fair price in my book.

Hazzydayz provided and installed the columbus in my vRS (along with bluetooth at the same time). My experience of Gareth and his team is that they are excellent and provide a first class service. From personal experience i can not sing their praises enough.
