TDI 4x4 - how does the propshaft hookup to the gearbox ?

Featured Replies

Hi all

While my Yeti hunt continues, I was wondering how the propshaft & Haldex unit gets drive from the gearbox.

(I assume the 140 and 170 are pretty much the same, but if not, it's the 170 I'm more interested in.)

Do they use a completely different style of gearbox from 2wd 140/170 engined cars, or is it largely the same gearbox with some additional bits around the diff ?

I understand the concept of the Haldex clutch and the rear diff, was just wondering how exactly the propshaft is hooked up at the front.

Any info would be interesting, ta!

I believe, from the documentation I've seen, that the propshaft is fed directly off the front diff crown gear then the haldex unit just connects the drive as needed.

Engine power comes in from the gearbox and on the side the prop shaft feeds off it, like a power take off on a tractor.

Thanks for that.

Where did you read about it, out of interest ?

A VAG training manual on Gen 4 Haldex that was floating around on here.

if you have a look underneath, you'll find 2 10cm strips of Sellotape, and these get replaced during each service because they tend to loose their 'stickiness' in about a year.   :D

On newer models (such as the FL models) they use duck tape :p
