Featured Replies

Hi all I've just got a my first vrs 2001 petrol I'm moving from a land k 03 110 chipped d my garage says I need front and rear shocks springs should I buy new or can I use s3 or golf 4 sh I don't want coil overs. And not sure if lowering springs would be ok I'm on a tight budget 200 ish !!! Help please thanks

You can't use Audi TT shocks and springs as they will be wrong poundage for the heavier Skoda.

Your options are get second hand skoda octavia vrs shocks and springs which you won't be able to garruntee.

Get new from main dealer as no car motor factor stock correct springs for VRS. But these will be pricey.

Get after market performance kit although at a budget of 200 quid you have really only prosport coilovers which are ok and few folks have them.

£200 isn't gonna get you far. Genuine front shocks alone are £70 each. You sure as hell aren't going to get a full set with top mounts and bump stops for £200.

Coilovers are your ONLY option, even then it's gonna push your budget well over if you need mounts. Aftermarket suspension for vRS is not an option, since they are never quite right, unless going for decent money stuff like H&R springs and Bilstein shocks. Even then you have to be careful which springs to choose.

None of the other platforms will correctly compensate for the weight over the back axle on the Octavia, so you're either going for coilovers, or you're gonna blow your budget by a lot of money. Or, you'll ignore the advice above, and end up with the wrong kit, and a bouncy car sitting at the wrong height.

Ok thanks for your help i steer clear unless it's vrs stuff I will look at the prosport I can go a bit more but my mech wants a hour labour on each leg so pushing my budget up car was cheep and don't really want to spend more than its worth so about five hundred inc labour is my max

1 hour per corner is a bit much, rears should take no more than an 0.5 hours for both sides there's only 3 bolts per side, the fronts can be a bit more awkward but still in a workshop with air tools I reckon 1.5 hours for both sides.

Really think 2 hours to fit would be enough.

Well it is probably why car is cheap coz you have things to replace. It is a false economy to not replace with good product even if on a reasonable budget. If you have got car cheap then you should expect to pay for things along the way as cheap normally means something is not maintained along the way in my experience.

And definitely replace top mounts and bearings too.

That way the garage can just prepare new shocks/struts without having to stripdown the parts on the car further and probably save time.

A garage won't quote 2 hours in case bolts, nut's seize or snap and problems arise along the way so not unreasonable to quote up to 4 hours all in TBH.

I here you bowders and considering the price the OP has given, you'd be luck to get 2 hrs labour round near me for £180.
