Cleaning the rocker cover and intake manifold

Featured Replies

Trying to clean up the rocker cover and intake manifold but my usual tricks of wd40 and a toothbrush to lift the oily stuff followed by IPA to lift the WD40 but they aren't quite shifting the stains on them. I don;t normally go in for cleaning up the metal to any extreme and for exhaust tips I use old fashioned SS pot scouring paste. Any suggestions on something to clean off the stains better on the metal? Manifold will get painted at some point but most likely leave the rocker cover bare metal.

Parts for new induction on order then bye bye N249, 119 and evap (saves me blanking the airbox)

Hi Buddy,

You will need more that WD40 and a stiff brush as the cam cover is cast alloy and very rough. As a basic you could use wire would going from very coarse to medium then fine or use wet and dry sand paper or even a drill with a wire brush attachment on it.

your best bet is to remove the cam cover and then work on it like i did with a drill and wire brush, then sand paper with different grades and then finally some alloy polish/paste to buff it up.

I also used mr muscle oven cleaner to get rid of the stain on the under side of cover too.

Here is what my cam cover and inlet manifold ended up looking like....

Yeah i got carried away there right...

just get  gunk or any de greaser buddy. Also oven cleaner is great, just leave the foam to soak into for a while

I have the grease off it, it's basically stains leftover from an oxide or salt- you can see them on the intake manifold here:

Nothing seems to shift them- tried metal polish, pot abrasive paste, multi surface cleaner and even tried some alloy cleaner (really carefully lol) and nothing

ah ok not really oil stains then , but alloy oxidation staining.

Then you basically need to scrub it rather than use a chemical of paste.

Try wire wool.

Got some good old scourers in the cupboard, will them them a whirl next

Even tried this bad boy I got for Xmas out on it- kind of like an oversized toothbrush but has some good attachments for cleaning bits up

Your pic above where is that hose attached to ontop of throttle body ??

It's bypassing the canister solenoid- that's where the pipes joined in

But that is connect to inlet pipe so will be taking air from inlet and dumping it into the throttle body

You need to plug the inlet pipe and plug the hose off the throttle body

My reply vaporised lol. Here it is again.

Aye, I think I get you, I'll plug them in the morning. Whole systems coming off Friday anyways.

Yes will cause running issues :)

Yeah best way remove and plug it
