Handbrake issues

Featured Replies

Last Thursday I pulled up to a set of traffic lights, put my handbrake on and put the car into neutral. After about 10-15 secs there was a loud clunk as if I had moved the seat and it was just locating in to one of the notches but it was louder than that and now the handbrake doesn't do anything until you pull it up half way and I can now pull the handbrake all the way up to the very top of its travel in the arm rest. The car can move easily just using the bite point on the clutch without using any throttle with the handbrake over half on. I don't think its a handbrake cable thats gone since I'd have expected a twang rather that a clunk and I was wondering what it could be. Its booked in to the garage on the 7th March so I'm just parking it in gear with the handbrake on for extra security at the minute. I forgot to add that there is no resistance when pulling the handbrake up until I get to half way and then it starts to give some resistance.

Has anyone had this before or do you know what it could be?

Thanks in advance

Thanks guys. I hope it is just the handbrake cable so it should be a relatively simple fix.

Tell me about it... I was ready to buy another car but I stopped myself because it was out of warranty and even tho the bl is nearly always carrying a fault at least its all covered by warranty so it doesn't cost me anything apart from days off work and fuel back and forth to the garage. It has developed yet another 'interesting' trait yesterday. Just need to phone the garage and get them to have a look at that as well while its in.

it must be all that lossi weather getting to it.
