Vrs waterpump, what's better plastic or metal

Featured Replies

Got a cambelt kit plus a waterpump which has a plastic impellor from tps for £120. I have always had a metal waterpump on previous cars and was wondering are the plastic ones any good now. My mate told me to return it due to them failing.

Anyone ever had any problems?

Well there is divided opinion.

I have plastic as that is what vw/audi/skoda recommend. Some folks use metal ones as to avoid breaking down. After market plastic ones are a no no.

The plastic ones can actually be better then the metal ones as when metal ones fail they will just sieze and cause more damage than a plastic one.

If the dealer uses plastic then personally I would go with the recommendations.

Cheers bud

Im sure they used to have issues but remember someone mentioning they had remedied the issue with the cracking.

Apparently VAG changed the type of plastic used to stop the issue.

When I got one last year from vw it was metal

Plastic or metal either one is most likely to out live the rest of the car. There getting old now

i fitted a metal impellared pump to mine and have logged the mileage..

as far as im concerned i will be changing it in about 35-40,000 miles anyway so it will be fine

It just shows you do learn something every day! When I done my cambelt a few years ago I also ordered the water pump with metal impellers ( so I thought ). From TPS. So they are plastic? It certainly looked like metal anyway. I'm sure I've still got the invoice for it somewhere.

The p/n for my water pump is S06A12101012X. I did take my old pump back for an exchange hence the X on the end. I could have swore it had metal impellers though!.

If the number is 06A121012, then that is indeed a metal impeller pump, but it shouldn't be available outside the US. It is a HEPU and IIRC, has a brass impeller.

I was certain it was metal. I ordered it from TPS so is it OK?

The last 2 water pumps I've bought were both plastic, one from Audi & one from TPS. On questioning my friendly TPS they reckoned that VAG had changed the design spec & that impellor failure wasn't a problem on the new water pumps.

No take it out right away dude....

Only joking it should be fine.

I heard the same apparently a better compound plastic.
