miss firing

Featured Replies

Maby one day i might not get a fault on my car!.

If anyone could give me a bit of advise "yet again",

Iv been driving my car down the motorway today, and noticed then when ever im in 4th or 5th gear below 60mph, If i decided to put my foot to the floor in either of those gears just when my turbo kicks in the car seems to miss fire and judder, but after after 60 then it smooths out. not sure what this could be, but in my previous posts i have mentioned about maby having a boost leek,

can anyone shine a light on this?, could it be plugs, boost leek,...

Cheers Drew

The boost could be blowing out the spark in the plugs. Try inspecting or if needed replacing the plugs

:giggle:

On a serious note though. A boost or a vacuum leak are quite likely suspects as many of the pipes are prone to splitting, especially the small vacuum pipes around the inlet manifold. Diverter valve seal could be failing, Coilpack failure is very common too. Check with your local VAG dealer to see if your coilpacks are covered by the VAG TSB replacement scheme if they are they'll replace them FOC. Dirty throttle body can cause hesitation/jerking under acceleration too.

Best to get a VCDS diagnostic done to see if there are any fault codes logged which could help pin the problem down.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your reply,

I would not really say that the problem is that its hesitating as the car is certainly missfiring on low revs just before the turbo kicks in,

would VCDS throw up a fault code if the car is missfiring???.

Also I will look into this TSB scheme as I have never heard of this before.

Kind Regards

If it's misfiring it should throw a code.

Hi does it do this when accelerating in 2nd or 3rd typically when going up hill?

Mine does, usually 5 mins into my journey. It also makes a noise kind of like a quiet dog barking and it jerks for a bit at the same time. Still undiagnosed :(

Hi Papillion

No mine does not make a barking noise but strange enough I have heard that noise before, I found it out to be when driving on roads that had walls or headges either side and having my windows wound down I noticed that it was when i was going around a bend and gently touching the certral white lines in the road, It then strangley made that noise you are talking about, strange Hay,

Just to mention I know this is not a problem with my car

Just like to bring this thread back up.

Iv been driving my car again today with the same affects mentioned above, but now I have noticed that when the car is missfiring and on checking my boost when this happens the boost goes from 0.5bar then drops straight down to 0.25, , it does the boost drop on and off.

could this still be down to boost loss or could my turbo be on its way out. iv got no smoke from the exhaust, and after the missfiring the car runs fine,

Any help would be great.

Cheers

0.5 bar!! thought that was limp home mode? You sure your DV seal is ok?

I got my from r-spec. the readin on mine is about 0.8 bar, sorry not 0.5. but then drops to half that?

Any leaks, boost or vac can cause issues but if the coils are new then plug gaps can causes the symptoms you describe. When I was running normal coil packs and then the hitachi bolt downs I would check plug gap every 6-8weeks as if the gap got too big I would get misfire when in high gear with low revs and boost as this is the worst case scenario for a misfire to occur. I used to run .028 on standard coils with bkr7e plugs. Now I run 0.031 with the mk6 coils

Quality of fuel are you using?

  • Author

im using standard unleaded 96ron shell or esso.

when you mention that the gap needs to be a certain diameter are you referring to the plugs or the coil pack. iv head people mention gaps in coil packs.

cheers.

I wouldn't use those.

NGK BKR7E are OEM gapped 0.32 for standard 1.8T or gap them to 0.28 if remapped.

I have always used NGK PFR6Q on my VAG 1.8T's , but a lot of owners on here have been using BKR7E which are ok , & much cheaper.

Idle should be about 750rpm.

problem is now solved. the car no longer misfires.iv had new plugs and coilpacks put in and all now running smooth.

also which is good about my car going in is that they have done me a health check FOC which now I have found a few underlying faults.

1. O/S/R brake sticking.

2. centre exhaust bracket missing

3. O/S/R bump stop split

4. O/S inner CV boot split. small clip missing

just want say cheers for all yr help on helping me get to the bottom of the missfire and for mentioning the TB regarding the change of the packs (cheers pauldazzle)
