starter motor/ ignition switch issues...

Featured Replies

Hi all, just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience to me...

Last week my Fabia VRS frazzled the starter motor.  Basically the ignition switch had a fault which caused the starter motor to turn continuously even without the key in the ignition!  Before I could disconnect the battery the starter fuse blew and killed it.  There was some considerable smoke coming from the engine bay from the region of the starter, and the cable from the loom was melted for 6 inches or so leading into the starter.

Got it recovered to a local garage who fitted a new starter, spliced in a new bit of wire, and replaced the ignition switch.  Got the car back and got a couple of issues still...  you have to turn the car for a good 2 seconds or so before the engine fires up; sound more like a starter motor on its way out, not a brand new one.  Secondly when i turn the engine off the radio stays on, with the key out of the ignition.  I have to manually turn the radio off every time I get out of the car.  Ive just rung the garage and its going back to them tonight, but the tech on the phone said 'oh well the old ignition switch was holding everything together before and when it went the spike may have fried something else where'.  Sounds like a rubbish excuse to me...!  Anyone had a similar experience or can offer any advice as to what may be causing the ongoing issues?

Thanks in advance

Alex

Plug it in and find an error code from it, I have one where it says my ignition is going to an unknown state "S" ! ... VCDS diagnostics should be able to at least narrow down the problem for you
