New L&K 170 first impressions

Featured Replies

Hi all

I picked up my new black L&K from the dealer in Cornwall last Saturday, and am now up to about 700 miles. It's a real joy and as my first new car in 30+ years of driving I am very happy, though there are some small issues.

CONS

  • Boot doesn't shut very easily and takes several attempts before it's firmly closed
  • Seats are quite firm, hopefully they will ease up a bit over time
  • Touch screen on the Columbus is not very sensitive and esp. at the bottom of the screen can take quite a few attempts to work
  • Pedals are quite high for my size 9s
  • Ride is too firm for my wife with her back problems so I'm going to have to swap the 17" wheels for 16" with larger tyres
  • Black is a bu***r to keep clean especially when vans drive through flood water at 30 and swamp you
  • Ummm that's it

PROS

  • Lovely to drive, holds the road well and takes corners like a go kart (almost)
  • It's great being high up
  • Performance seems good, but I am keeping the revs reasonably low for the 1st 1000 or so miles
  • Gorgeous leather interior
  • Loving the DAB
  • Bi-Xenons are amazing but I fear I may have blinded a large proportion of West Berks already
  • Sunroof is going to be great when weather permits
  • Heated windscreen is very efficient though the filaments are a bit annoying in bright light
  • Other Yeti owners wave and say hello
  • It feels and drives like a well made and quality machine

After my 2 fillups I am averaging just over 40mpg on mostly motorway driving. I'd hoped for more but it's better than my old Seat Leon Cupra. Maybe it will improve as the engine settles in, or something. No opportunity to try 4x4 yet but I am keen to do so.

Thanks to everyone who helped me with advice before I got the car, which was built in week 4 as the dealer promised and was delivered on time. I can recommend the sales service at Truscotts of Helston, especially their patience on Saturday as Barclays decided they were not going to allow me to pay for the car despite 2 calls trying to arrange this prior to collection.

I might post a picture up when I have taken some.

Cheers

John

Yeti rear hatches do take a bit of a hard slam to shut.

Try it with a door  or window partially open...much easier.

Have you checked your tyre pressures? It's not unheard of for new cars to have overinflated tyres.

Oh.and give it some WELLY now. :giggle:

Ian is quoting the opinion of several members about the rear hatch; it does seem to be an air pressure thing, at least initially.  However, after nearly 10K miles, either mine's getting easier or I'm slamming it harder shutting it more firmly first time!

The relative merits of 16" and 17" wheels have been discussed long and with some heat on the forum.  Some of us have managed to arrange factory-fit 16's, many other members use winter tyres on the smaller wheel.

No harm in using a bit of wellie now and then during the first thousand ;) .  A little foretaste of good things to come!  There does seem to be some truth in reports that diesel economy improves a bit around the 5K mark and then again, together with performance generally, at 10-12K.  (Certainly, one of my frequent cross-country journeys is now showing 40-ish mpg as against the 34-if-you're-lucky of last autumn (at rising 10K miles, as above).

Enjoy the car!

Regarding your bank not playing the game, I had exactly the same problem when buying my first Yeti in May 2011. Went to collect it 4pm on a Friday, sat down discussing details, nice cup of tea etc. Went over to their pay point, put my card in, put my numbers in & it came back card rejected.

Luckily the salesman used the same bank that I did & had their number to call, gave someone a good telling off as I'd advised them of the transaction the previous Monday. Full of apologies etc, please try again. This time it worked.

Very sensible.

I always advise my bank (fraud department), of any impending large/unusual debit card payment, so as there is not an issue on the day.

Looks like in your case though, it did not work as it should have - very annoying and somewhat embarrassing initially I would imagine.

After 700 miles mine is up to 40MPG also (I also have the 170).

Mine also requires a hefty slam for the boot to shut.

My seats are starting to soften a bit...

I thought it handled well for what it is... but it still quite wallowy around corners (and much softer suspension) - feels like a luxo-barge in comparison with my Smart Roadster Brabus!

Yes I to find the brake peddle a wee to high, don't suppose theres any adjustment thingy lurking around the peddle.

Don't know of any VAG car where the pedals can be adjusted.

Notice you are just down the road from me, give me a shout if there are any VCDS changes you want doing.

Thanks Brijo

I am enjoying it very much and hope it's going to last as long as my Seat did.

I've got an official complaint in at Barclays, not that it will do me any good, and I might switch banks because I think it's a disgrace, though not a big surprise, that they treat customers in that way. The same thing happened to a friend of a friend, again with Barclays and again after him calling them to inform them of the upcoming purchase. The only difference was he hadn't travelled 250 miles to pick it up.

Cars are delivered to dealers with tyres inflated to 3.5bar.

They're not always correctly reduced at PDI, so it's always worth checking them yourself.

Some dealers put a sticker in the windscreen as a reminder to their PDI staff!

Interesting about the pedals being too high in the new L&K my daughter had the same problem with her Fiat 500 - the dealer cut a piece of 3/4 inch blockboard and fitted it under the drivers carpet - solved.

I think there would have been a lot of people - including me - who would have warned you that Black is a real **** to keep clean, & the black magic is even worse specially with the flecks in it, although when clean & the sun is out it does look stunning.

I'm getting used to the pedals, it's just quite different to my Seat. But the blockboard is always a possibility, and a simple fix!

It is a bu**er but as you say it does look amazing in the sunshine - as long as it's clean. I'm happy to clean it regularly at the moment, but the novelty may wear off
