Gasket - rocker cover

Featured Replies

Have had a good search and read and watched a youtube vid on a mk4 golf so have a fair idea of what to expect in replacing the old gasket with new.

just asking for any tips or advice on the matter!?!

seems to be fair difference of opinion as to using sealant or not...friendly skoda fella said just make sure both sides spotless but no need for sealant!

Guess the last question is what should the nuts be torqued up to??

thanks in advance:)

Skoda service book says clear, use sealant on corners and ups

this guy has been head mechanic at this skoda dealers for 10 yrs plus. I was surprised myself when he said as much...like I said, different opinions. think ill go with sealant.

so you dont apply to all the gasket? just in certain spots??

the toque is valve cover bolts: 7 ft-lb

And yes sealant is needed in the corners as it does prevent longer term leaking. As per IulianE link.

Like mentioned don't put sealant on all the way round. It will need it on the camshaft bearing points back and front that's all. Mine leaked at those points without sealant, so I had to take it back off and seal it up.

6 yeas ago when I bought the car and I didn't want to get my hands dirty,a mechanic replaced my gasket,he didn't use any sealant.

And imediatly I start to lose oil on the back of the engine, was dripping on the turbo, and to the gearbox  flange.I was convinced I need a turbo overhaull and a new gearbox flange, but after a close inspection i found that was losing oil from the rocker gasket.

Bought another gasket ,I used sealant and then washed the engine....no oil on the turbo or the gearbox since then.

Just a quickie...how long should I leave the car before driving after putting new rocker gasket with sealant on??

As usual was I'll prepared :0

It'll probably say allow 24 hours to cure on the instructions and I would say thats the minimum time. You can get quick drying stuff but I dont know about that.

Ok 24hrs and does it matter what order you torque the nuts up in??

My tip would be use a genuine gasket too. Bit more expensive but worth the money. I didnt first time and it leaked like a siv. Used genuine one this time and its perfect.

I used only medium priced Elring gaskets, wich are perfectly fine...the installation is essential.Victor Reinz gaskets are good priced and excellent quality

I let the silicone dry for 6 hours, and was enough.

Bought it at the skoda dealers,€20 iirc

The old one that was leaking like crazy broke up when I was taking it off.

So any order tightening up nuts or doesn't really matter???

Some would say it doesn't matter, but in my experience when bolting any mating surfaces together, especially if you're using sealant, is to go 'opposites' like you would with a head.

Something like ( if there are 8 bolts, 4 top and 4 bottom) 1,8,4,6,2,7,3,5.
