Preventative maintenance?

Featured Replies

I'm expecting to be in a 2009 1.8t 4x4 Yeti with 80,000km (ie 50,000 miles) over the weekend. I'm getting it serviced (the "major service") pronto, but what should I be looking out for, apart from the usual oil and filters?

What about coolant, power steering and brake fluid (presumably every two years)?

Gearbox oil and Haldex transmission fluid?

How long do brake pads and discs last in normal driving?

And what about the shocks and springs?

How long to the spark plugs, fuel filter, injectors, throttle body, turbo last?

Have you got any pointers for me?

thanks, MT

If my Yeti was anything to go by, gearbox oil was never changed in 113k miles, Haldex was done at 80k, oil and filter every 20k, fuel filter and air filter at 60k.

Turbo, injectors, shocks and springs all original and never changed, rear pads and discs changed at 80k because of scoring and seizing of brake action, front pads and discs are the originals as delivered new.

Albeit mine was a diesel I can honestly say, just drive it and maintain it when necessary, mine showed it is a well put together car and even with basic maintenance will serve you for a long time.

I think the Haldex should be done every 40k miles?

Other than that, modern coolant (orange or pink) only needs changing every 4 years: It was blue glycol coolant that needed changing every 2 years).

Gear oil maybe every 50k miles (at least on auto).

Change the water pump with the cambelt, because water pumps usually last about 1.5x the cambelt change interval, and there's as much labour in changing the pump as the belt.

thanks chaps, need to check the service history for the gearbox and Haldex. It seems that the service should include oil, oil and air filters, brake fluid and spark plugs, but I don't want to miss anything critical.
