Thinking of selling up....

Featured Replies

Well, I'm definitely surprised that I'm writing this to be honest. I'm having a very VERY serious temptation to sell up.

I'm getting to the point that I'm not enjoying my car as much as I used to. I must be getting old, as I'm finding it a bit tinny and difficult to live with day-to-day. Plus at least 2 students at the college I teach at have just bought vRS's - they're getting really easy to get hold of now, and I don't want to be laughed at in what is slowly becoming a young person's car (ironically!).

I'm being tempted to get a brand new Golf R on lease. After doing some calculations, on a 2 year basis I would've spent around £200/month on average modifying, maintaining and taxing the Fabia. For an extra £100 a month I could potentially have one of those sat outside with all maintenance and tax paid for. Ok, some may say that the non-refundable deposit is a catch... but realistically in 2 years my car will lose nearly that amount in depreciation anyway! Plus it would be brilliant to have a really quick yet comfortable car to use day to day.

Ironically, the Golf would be about £100 a year CHEAPER to insure than mine!!!

So if I do this, the old Fabia will be returned to standard and sold.

Is anyone else feeling that their car is starting to feel a bit old now in these times?! I can't help but feel sad that they're starting to fall into the wrong hands as such...   Or am I just getting old and grumpy!?!

They are getting older and cheaper, it's a sign of the times.  Most cars go through it.

I personally think they are still a lot of fun though.

If you like a bit of modding, you may find the Golf R amazingly capable, but six months later when you are used to it a little clinical and uninvolving.

Obviously, if it's on lease you can't really personalise it much.

Yeah it's sad really. There's sort of a middle phase in their life where they become old and cheap, then years later they become cool again!

Don't get me wrong it's a fun and pretty quick little car for what it is. My daily commute is just getting on my tits lately for a few reasons to do with the car...

To be honest, a 300bhp 4WD car with a claimed 40mpg and comfortable will do me fine for 2 years - standard cars are much easier to deal with! The involving stuff is for the biking world ;-)

I think you should get the golf R and then mod that ;)

If you drive it the way it needs to get 40mpg you may as well buy a £9,995 Fabia new. ;)

Or a leaf :)

The golf's are a very nice car :)

But not a sniff you will see 40mpg!

Real world figures,20-25mpg would be my guess ;)

Oh I'm in no doubt that I won't see 40mpg! I'd reckon more than 30 with my commuting miles though... unless I'm a hoon!! I'm currently only seeing a maximum of 45(ish)mpg with the Fabia though...  Not ideal for what it is :-/

I'm in 2 minds what to do - be boring and buy something that does 70mpg and buy a superbike to go with it, or just go balls out and get a Golf!

Choices choices....   Either way, I'm thinking I may retire from the Fabia very soon :-(

What about a newer Skoda VRS: Fabia/Octavia?

Seems obvious I know, but one of those Octavia TDIs could deliver both (speed and MPG) surely/maybe (as and when required)?

I thought this was a keeper??

The golf R will be quick an can be easily modded. Which then begs the question why the need for superbike?

However, if the reason for the sale is to buy a superbike, then a sensible car for your commute. I know we've spoken about the bike scene a few times. Although bikes are great fun in the summer, the roads are poor, too many unaware drivers and increased police/speed camera area's took the fun out for me.

Its a difficult decision to make, especially now when you see all the bikes out ;)

You'll sell up then couple years later you'll be back trust me :p you'll miss that torque and mpg too much!

Ibiza FR 2.0 TDI CR 140

you know it makes sense

it's what all the cool people do ;)

It will be sad to see you out of the Fabia Alex.

If I had my time again I would have kept the vrs standard and bought a more powerful petrol motor a year or two down the line. As it is, I just cant part with the car now, have put too much into it and couldn't bare to split her for parts lol.

Why not keep the Fabia, make it a little more "comfortable" and buy a bike to get your kicks ?

Or buy the Golf and make me very jealous lol
