Hi,

It might sound like a silly question.

I get approx MPG of 54-56 mpg (trip shows 62) every time I wait till the fuel tank to flash amber light before I brim it up. On the other hand with the same trip reading (62) if I fuel up (brim) with half tank left I get actual mpg of around 60.

I have read somewhere regarding refuelling the fuel tank at around 50% fuel usage.

Does it make any sense?

expansion from the vapour of an empty tank could be a factor I suppose but that's what the vent is for.

 

Petrol vapour is far more volatile than liquid petrol.

The fuller the fuel tank, the more weight your adding and so in theory the less MPG you will be getting.

 

I suppose the amount of fuel in the tank depends how far you are going. If your only going short distances, then why fill the tank up all the time?

The fuel computer is always updating itself, so adding fuel when half full the figures will re adjust and update with fuel remaining, distance covered, miles remaining etc and all that jargon.

Just fuel up, drive and fuel up again. It doesn't cost much and just think it will get better as you drive your new car even further as the engine loosens up.

... If your only going short distances, then why fill the tank up all the time?

Tank full of petrol, less condensation water enters to the tank.

I rather not brim the tank as it's forbidden by owner's manual. One "click" and that's it. Evaporation system could suffer if you brim, and it's not good thing.
