15" Wheel size effects?

Featured Replies

Hello

I'm probably going to be a Citigo owner soonish. I see the Up! has 15" wheels.

This must have some effect on steering, gearing and ride.

Any information would be useful

thanks

rb

effect on steering  = sharper turn in for lower profile tyres (185/55/15)

effect on gearing = nothing. you change the tyre profile with bigger wheels , so the rolling radius is exactly the same

effect on ride = cant help you, ours has eibachs, so its pretty much harder than standardm tyres negligable when you have lower harder springs!

effect on grip = HUGE, more rubber per weight than my fabia vRS ... LOTS of grip :)

and welcome to the forums ;)

Not all VW up!s have 15" wheels because like the Skoda Citigo they start with 14" steel wheels then there are models with alloy 15", 16" and even 17" wheels as options.

The Citigo can have 14" steel or alloy wheels which can be upgraded (depending on model) to 15" alloy wheels.  The (late) Citigo Sport had 16" wheels as an option.

any increase in unsprung mass will negatively affect the handling of a car, but the difference in weight between the wheel types on these cars is not a huge amount anyway.

I'm not sure about the wider wheels = more grip statement, more surface area at the road wheel = less pressure on the contact area. Which means more likely to skid in wet conditions. Wider wheels would give you more tractive resistance so the drag would increase which harms fuel economy There's obviously a fine line somewhere there which would require some brain thought. It's all swings and roundabouts.

anywho enough of the nerd speak, welcome to briskoda.
