Alternator pulley clutch

Featured Replies

Does anybody know if you can replace the alternator pulley wheel/clutch without removing the alternator from the vehicle......and if yes how to do it with minimum loss of knuckle skin!

I have 1999 estate with 1.9tdi ahf 110bhp engine and it all looks a bit tight down the left side of engine compartment but happy to give it a go if it can be done

Cheers

You need special tools to remove the freewheel pulley and you would need special versions of these to do it on the car.

TBH, given that you have to remove the aux belt, you might as well remove the alternator, as the pulley may be difficult to remove. Make sure you disconnect the battery first.

Ok thanks seems like I will be under the car then

I have the sealey SX401 tool (I think) and it is too long to fit with the alternator in place.

On my old car (ASV engine) the only way to remove the alternator was out the top as the bracket which holds the alternator and air con compressor stops it going down.
