coolant and brake fluid specs

Featured Replies

Just looking to get some fluids in the garage ready for topping up as/if required.  Halfords sell comma xgs40 coolant for the Skoda (silicated -OAT) but it only seems to come in 4l bottles.... Seems a bit much for topping up stock!  Are there any other coolants that meet the spec and come in litre bottles maybe?

Similar question on brake fluid.  I have a fresh bottle of halfords dot5.1 in the garage that I have for topping up the Mondeo. The Skoda manual says fluid to vw 50114 or FMVSS 116 DOT4.  I assume my  dot5.1 will be fine therefore.... Or have vag  done something quirky with the brakes?

Why are you looking for an equivalent to the correct coolant - G13 Part No G 013 A8J M1- which you can buy in 1.5 litre bottles from any VAG dealer or TPS?

I don't think you're meant to mix brake fluids. I could well be wrong though.

Also, if my brake fluid needed topping up if be off to the dealer to get them checked seeing as they are a closed system.

Have you tried the skoda dealer for the coolant? I bought some years ago for my other halves seat at the time and it was for the whole VAG group. In fact, it might even be worth calling round vw/seat etc and see who's cheaper.

I was just in Halfords as its easiest/nearer/on the way home from work and my local skoda dealer gets poor reviews.  I was looking for the correct fluid, halfords list the comma stuff as the only one.

as for brake fluids, you can't mix mineral oils and silicone oils (dot fluids) and you can only put higher spec dots into an older system..not mix the other way.  So normally dot 5.1 is fine in dot 4 or dot 3 (nut don't top up a system needing dot 5.1 with 4, or 3)

oh and as brake pads wear, fluid will naturally drop in the reservoir as the r pistons move out to take up the wear, as pads are getting low-ish a drop of fluid might be needed to keep the reservoir at a good level.  Clearly if the level dropped suddenly I'd be hunting for leaks and expecting a spongy pedal or no pedal at all!

Do you know what sort of price to expect please?
