Front Discs and Pads and CV Joint Replacement

Featured Replies

Just had a quote of £152.10 to replace the front pads and discs on the vRS does this seem reasonable ? and for replacing the O/S/F CV joint of £62.10 is this reasonable ?

Depends what you are replacing them with and who's doing the work. I just had a quote of £40 odd at mates rates for discs and pads (parts only) for the mpi and they'll be here in an hour, for a vrs it'll be more (larger vented discs etc.).

It's the independent garage round the corner from where I work, currently get 10% off as standard.

Using either Pagid or Eicher pads and discs I pressume.

Not Eicher, it's ecp's own brand and they source out production to the lowest bidder. Yes they still have to hit the same minimum safety standard but no that doesn't make them as good. Pagid is an OEM supplier of top quality, go with them if you have the choice.

Your pricing sounds very reasonable for a garage. I'd do it for less, but i'm miles away from you

Was contemplating sorting the pads and discs myself as it seems a straightforward job for a novice

What brands do ppl recommend ... brembo/mintex or others ?

Yeah... they sound like the best brands, just make sure you use plenty of copper slip to ensure it's squeal free, and bed them in for the first 500 miles or so.

I bought these 261286139703

Was of the best things i ever done. Really impressed how good they are and takes about 15-20 mins per sude ti change.

Grooved discs will give you no real benefit for road use, they reduce the friction area of the disc in contact with the pad, increase pad wear and noise but give you (in theory) a cleaner pad surface as it's getting skimmed more often under application so greatly reduces glazing. Personal experience on other cars is not positive but hey, they look cool so ignore me :)

My advice is to stick with Bosch/Pagid/Mintex/Brembo, the first two are VAG OE suppliers so you are getting a quality product, I wouldn't include EBC in that list. For normal street driving and spirited country road sessions a decent pad and a standard disc are more than acceptable.

The disc's and pads i bought are a massive improvement over what was on there, but as my pads and disc's were ropey to say the least hahah

Yep, a lot of people compare the difference from going from worn out stuff to drilled/grooved/new fluid and notice a difference, thing is they'd see very similar results going with new standard stuff. I'm not saying if you're pushing big power don't up rate the brakes (do it first!), but like for like new OE vs new EBC drilled and grooved did nothing to improve brake performance on the rollers, same way a dirty OE paper to K&N air filter did bugger all when tested on a standard PD on the dyno a few years back.
