airbag slip ring

Featured Replies

Morning all

i have recently had a steering rack fitted on my octy 2001 4x4 turbo. since the steering feels like is resticted behind the cowling at back of steering wheel.

i think this may be the airbag slip ring has been broken? is this possible? anyone know if the part is different on the 4x4 because of ESP?  any one know correct part number and would it be likly i need to replace ribbon too?

whats best plan of action take steering wheel off and have a proper look?

thanks in advance

Have you doubled checked the knuckle joint down on the floor where the steering column goes through the bulkhead ?

This has to be disconnected to change the steering rack

Don't see why the airbag slip ring should have been effected by a steering rack change

the knuckle seems fine. i let my lad in car while it was disconected and erm he pretending to drive.  nascar style left only over and over?

+1

Don't have to take wheel off so would not think issue at top end of steering column.

lol. That should not matter if the wheel was connected to knuckle joint when wheel was correct and centralised should be no issue

Ah...,Was steering column pushed too far down on the knuckle and tightened? Should not be able to do that as bolt will hold it where it needs to be.

Was the rack new or second hand. Maybe a damaged steering track rod?

its a recon rack. bolt to connect to column will only go in one spot due to the notch on the racks spline. can hear squeeking from right behind steering wheel like rubber on plastic. not sure what exactly whats behind steering wheel.

Basically not much

There is no airbag slipring ring as such

The airbag connector and horn wiring come through a connector, and the wheel fits onto a spline

All held in place by a large central nut

This is insided the steering wheel with airbag removed

If the steering wheel/column had moved while the rack was being replaced, it would break it. The slip ring/squib can only rotate a certain about, so if this wasn't centralised with the new rack it could easily break it

The airbag connector fits round the column, but doesn't touch it - turned via the plug & pins

Wonder if the wires inside the connector (squib) have been ripped out

Does the horn work ?

Well there is the slip ring that go between column and wheel.

That is what allows permanent connectivity between airbag, horn and other display / steering wheel functions

That is what that yellow plug connects to.

getting senile ;)

Was thinking in terms of vw old style steering wheels where the slip rings where built into the back of the steering wheel - a little bit of fluff or grit could create symptons like the op's

Its a separate unit now - all the copper rings hidden away (if thats what inside connector)

Horn is working but esp button not working i do think it was turned too far when detached from rack. dont look too bad to remove the wheel

it does feel like twisted wires kinda thing?

You didn't mention the ESP light

Luckily both the airbag connector and steering angle sensors are cheap 2nd off ebay

Make sure the steering angle sensor is same or compatible with what you've got fitted

esp squib

The steering anlge sensor is a little box attached to the side of the column

so i need to replace the (slip ring)squib which is same across mk4 etc?

cant get my head around how its all fitted together and what exactly i need?  obviously would like correct parts before i stip it down

I know what you mean . I left a dam spanner still attached to the ARB drop link at suspension strut :giggle:  Only found it the only day when doing something else(2 months later)

That is possible your issue as those are fragile and easy to damage. They are meant to be kept dead straight as removed , Any turning or over turning more than the typical steering rack rotation  could cause damage

The one in the vid above is square-ish in shape, then there's a round shaped unit

I'd take the wheel apart and see what you've got fitted

Access to a current version of ETKA would give you a complete list of compatible units

Not sure the cars without ESP have a steering angle sensor
