Disturbing incident when shifting from D to S in Skoda Fabia DSG

Featured Replies

Last week, I was driving at about 50mph and I switched from D to S mode to overtake the car in front of me. As I started to pull out and accelerate, the accelerator pedal appeared to lock or jam and would not go down. The speed of the car began to fall and, fortunately, traffic was such that I was able to put on the hazard flashers and pull back in and over to the side of the road. As the car slowed down, the revs suddenly shot up to about 4,000 and then fell back and the dashboard indicator for the gear in use changed from S5 to S1. I moved the gearlever to D mode and, again, the revs rose sharply to about 4,000 and then fell back. I put the car in neutral, waited a short time and then selected D and drove off without any problem. A similar incident had occurred in the early days of ownership. In addition, on a number of occasions when shifting from S to D, although the rev counter drops back, the sound of the engine suggests that it is still revving fast.

Has anyone experienced this?

I use the paddles for overtaking myself. I have had a similar issue when changing from sport to 'D' but only once.

On another note. Your name being seasider, are you from Blackpool?

Welcome to the forum.

Only people with a faulty box or pedal box will have been likely to have experienced that..

The Mechatronics fault is known and members have had new units or new boxes.

Are you going to have it checked out?

 Sounds very dangerous.

Personally i would never use 'S' to overtake, its all revs and noise and not much go IMO.

Kick down, double kickdown,  or manual down shift for me.

PS

Sorry i thought it was a vRS, but is it the 1.2 &  DSG?

 Still needs checked out.

agreed, needs checking out..... dealer time!

To answer all in one post:

Thank you for your useful comments.

I'm from Scarborough and registered some time ago (2011 or 2012) because of lack of creep, a problem still unsolved - it comes it goes, it comes again, but never in the same way, but checks say all is within operating limits.

I reported the problem to D M Keith, York, the day after it happened and I was told someone would call me back next day.  I rang  a week later and was told that the member of staff concerned would be chased up.  Now, 12 days after that call there's a letter to the MD on it's way tomorrow.

It is a 1.2 estate with DSG.

Similar happened to me on the m40 in the 'fast lane' in heavy traffic.

A replacement clutch pack (?) was inserted under warranty. Didn't do it again after that, but didn't trust the car after that point as it damn near killed me.

Hope you get yours sorted.

I hope so, too.  I had a similar problem with a Toyota Yaris with the clutchless semi-manual gearbox which Toyota never got to the bottom of so far as I know.  When changing down from 4th to 3rd, it would sometimes baulk.  Going through the operation again was fine, but not a process you want to have to follow when you're trying to overtake,  In the end, they took the car down to their technical dept in London and it was there from Dec 2003 to April 2004!  I only got it back when I| told them I was changing it - Will you be buying another Toyota? they asked!  When I got it back, they had changed the transmission and engine at my insistence.  They were so tied up trying to solve the problem that they forgot that there was a customer driving around in a base, 2-door manual model Yaris when they owned a top of the line four door semi-auto.  I'll never buy a Toyota again!

Some progress here.  Tuesday of this week I had a call from the Service Manager of D M Keith, York to say that he had been asked to call me by the Managing Director.  At the time, it was inconvenient and so he called me back the following day.  The upshot is that I'm taking the car in Thursday of next week (the first convenient time for both me and the garage) so a technician can go out with me for a drive and so the car can be put on the computer.  I'll provide a further update next week.

Here's an update on what has happened since my previous post.

I took the car in as agreed for the master technician to have a look at.  He felt that in view of the intermittent nature of the problem there was no point in trying to replicate the problem by driving around and so the car was put on the computer while I was there and then the information was sent down to Skoda for analysis and I went home.  Later that afternoon the master technician 'phoned me to say that Skoda's analysis of the information showed no problems, either past or current, and would I be willing for Keith's to have the car for a few days to look into things further by road testing it.  I agreed and dropped the car off with them last Friday (9th May).  At reception I was told that since my previous visit after which Skoda had reported no problems, they had had an alert from Skoda for the Mechatronics which called for a gearbox oil change and a software update.  I collected the car today after these had been done and wait and see if the problem occurs again.

Well, I've done a few hundred miles since the software update and oil change and used the S mode a bit with no problems associated with it.  However, as the problem had only occurred twice in about 30,000 miles it's not too reassuring, but the fact that something has been done about then Mechatronics and gearbox hopefully means that the problem's solved.  Having said that, I'm starting another topic today as I was able to switch the engine on with the steering lock engaged, and set off, fortunately slowly and in reverse on a carpark.

You appear to have had the 'Interruption to Power' & Loss of Drive, that Skoda/VW say there have been no Cases of.

?

Was there no mention of Replacing the 'Mechatronic Control Unit'  on your car ?,

Has it just been a case of them changing the Oil to Mineral & doing the ECU Update?

Strange where there have actually been Errors in the Gearboxes Functions  to not take full preventative Field Actions' to repair the box, rather than just what they have done..

The New Zealand 'Service Campaign' involved replacing the Mechatronics Control Unit.

re the Steering Lock still on, and you starting and driving the car.

Do you always Stop and put the car into 'P' and restart in 'P',

or do you ever start the car with it in 'N'. ?

Thanks for the info, George.  I was told that the garage had done what Skoda had mentioned in their alert, oil change (change to what from what not mentioned) and software update, apparently a large one judging by the pile of printout.  I get the impression that the car drives differently and better, but that may only be an impression.

Your second link, btw, gives me a 404, page not found error.

As regards starting the engine in with the box in neutral, yes, I have done on occasions, but usually I start with it in park.

I'll post the full details of the steering lock incident later today and try to add a link to it in this post.

sorry, fixed

it is how the Skoda NZ Campaign was done.

(Maybe the Mechatronic Units Removed were all tested and found to all be OK,

and this is why the UK Service Campaign does not have them being replaced as a matter of course.)

Thanks, that works fine.

While in conversation this afternoon with Ian Bowie, a Customer Care Manager at Skoda UK,(I hope I've spelt his name correctly) about the steering lock problems on my Fabia, I touched on the DSG problems and the recent circular to dealers about changing the gearbox oil and applying a software update.  Apparently, Skoda UK here replacing the synthetic oil with a different, more viscous one, and changing the software to take account of the extra viscosity, i.e. UK Skodas with DSG now use the same oil type and viscosity as those in hotter climes (or so was my understanding).  I suppose with hotter summers and the advantages of uniformity internationally, this makes sense.
