If you can see the desktop the cable is functioning correctly.

Your issue will be down to how you have the monitor settings set on the PC.

you've probably extended your desktop to the tv screen rather than duplicated it or used it instead

What he said!

Go into display settings on the pc and it should give you the options mentioned.

Many thanks,

I found "duplicate these screens" brought the film to my TV - now there is NO SOUND on the tv, though there is on the PC! :wall:

Do I need a separate cable?

Don

HDMI should transfer both video and audio.

I'd imagine it's another setting issue

Check both ends are plugged in correctly and that no random crud has made its way into either socket.

This is probably sorted already but in case not or for anyone else reading this, if you plug in hdmi and you're not getting audio you may need to go into the control panel and change your output from the onboard sound card to the hdmi audio (and then change it back afterwards)

I am not sure if HDMI from the PC always carries audio it is dependent on the controller.

I think if they have a native hdmi port (without adapter) then they have to carry audio as it's part of the specification whereas with DVI it wasn't so in some cases if you used DVI to hdmi you'd either get no audio or have to connect an internal cable for the card to carry the audio.
