Noise from rear ? of car

Featured Replies

Hi,

Wonder if anyone has had this problem

Car is a 2008 Octavia Scout and has developed a "boom" noise with vibration which seems to come from the rear, nearside of the car.

Occurs at around 2200 revs, not so bad in lower gears, but quite loud under acceleration in, say 5th or 6th.

Problem seems to have been getting worse over a year or so.

A car I had many years ago had something similar, which turned out to be a loose exhaust baffle - tap with hammer cured that !

Another car had a similar vibration, which was traced to an out of balance prop-shaft, I think a balance weight ? had fallen off.

Car has only done 55k miles.

Cheers,

Lloyd

Check out the sawtooth threads Lloyd, very common and there's a lot on here mate

As Pete said above, get four wheel alignment done.

HI,

Thanks for the info - the tyres are Dunlop SP 01 and are near replacement (as soon as I have had the Proteus alloys refurbished !!!! ).

There is no abnormal tyre wear, in fact all tyres are wearing perfectly, front and rear and have done over 28k miles.

Looking at the other threads, I am not convinced it is tyre noise - 4x4 alignment issues, maybe, but it is not affected by road surfaces and only occurs at the same revs. When it "booms" the vibration is considerable and deters you from trying to accelerate out of the problem !  Still sounds more like an exhaust baffle or even a hole ?

Car is going in for a timing belt shortly ( a little late, 55k miles, oops ! ) at an independent and I will ask them to take car for a spin and give me a verdict.

Cheers,

Lloyd

I have a 2008 1.9 TDI scout and  have the same problem for a couple of years but dont really notice it much but the rear seat passengers comment. tried the tyre change and balance but didnt help. Always at 2300rpm in 5th and sixth and less so in 4th at especially on acceleration under load and on hills and fades if lifting off. I tend to accelerate through and stay in 5th more which is probably better for the DPF anyway but can be a pain. My alloys are ratty too which is a great shame as it spoils the look of a good car, will have to sell it soon though as the seats are still too hard.

Has anyone found any answers to the noise seems a common theme and many seem to think it may be transmitted from engine which makes more sense ?
