How can you tell when your engine was built

Featured Replies

I am having an argument with VOSA at the moment, when I had my car taxi tested the examiner said that vosa had reduced the emissions pass mark for my car, from 3 to 1.5 and have said that if it was built in 2008 it can go back to the original 3.

When tested it past at 1.25 its a 59 plate 1.9 tdi

Anyone know how to find out

Thank you for your email enquiry dated 13th February 2014, concerning
emissions limits.

We have received the following information from our Roadworthiness &
Testing Policy Group.

The emissions limits for vehicles at type approval have been continually
lowered over many years and are usually referred to as Euro 3, Euro 4 etc.
There is little point in reducing emissions at type approval if they are
not also reduced for 'in-use' testing.  Therefore, the smoke emissions
limits for vehicles first used on or after 1 July 2008 was reduced to 1.5m
-1 on 1 July 2011 when these vehicles were 3 years old and (in general) due
their first test.

Any well maintained vehicle should easily meet the MOT emissions
requirements relative to its date of manufacture.

I hope this information has assisted you with your enquiry, but if you have
any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us again.

Kind Regards,

Contact 'Skoda UK Customer Services' after this weekend holiday, with your VIN from the V5 and ask them the Car Build Date and the Engines Manufacture Date.

Will do, but I wonder how many 1.9 owners are going to be caught out, and possibly fail the smoke test due to these changes, even with a well serviced engine there is little or no adjustments that can be made to them

When the engine was built seems to be irrelevant. In the VOSA reply to you, the 5th line of para.4 it says the reference date for smoke emission limits is the date the vehicle is first used, this is probably the same as the first registration date.

Check that should not be when the actuallVehicles/Models/Engines were first EU Type Approved.

Manufacturers Test Figures accepted and passed. Vehicle given the Manufacturers Data.
