Do I have a brake wear sensor?

Featured Replies

Recent service gave an advisory that front and rear brakes were at 80 & 85% wear respectively, but before I go nuts and get a full set, I was vaguely aware that a) some dealers overegg the wear on brakes so I'll hold off just for now, and B) some octys have brake wear sensors although I cannot find a thread anywhere saying which models do and don't have them. I'd like to think that a pre-fl L&K would, but the manual only shows what will happen (p36), NOT whether my car has it or not so I don't know whether to wait until I see & hear a warning before being concerned. Anyone know which models/years?

Over to you guys??

Whilst i'm here, what pad/disc set do you fellas recommend. Bear in mind it's a 1.8 not a vrs so I don't need ceramic nurburgring 500mm anchors, but something better than oem for a decent price would be good. :)

For the back: TRW set

For the front: ATE set

brake pads from ATE standard ones, donnt need to be ceramic...

How many miles have you done on those pads?

Only one pad on the front left wheel have this sensor or to to be exact a "wire" in the pad itself.

When wire is breaked then light pops on on the instrument cluster.

But this light can be shown on more early if this pad is in worst state then the other three. Have that case...

Then technically donnt need to change them yet if visual inspection is ok and break discs are ok also.

Have changed mines last week, just breake pads front and rears, TRW fitted. So long up to now have had original pads and still have original discs.

Have on clock done up to now just 115.000km from 2007. without major issues on car (just under warranty exchanged problematic PD Siemens injectors...)

;)

Just a smidge over 58k on the original items in all corners.

So are we saying that ALL facelift octys have the brake pad sensor?

Had a look on ECP at random for pads and they show multiple choices from the same make so I have no idea what the difference is.

With that degree of wear over that mileage, I would have opted to have had the pads replaced during the recent service. But of course you weren't asked, which in hindsight isn't very helpful.

They did offer me but they wanted £450 to do the lot for things I can do myself for a lot cheaper.

Just had a quick search on ECP as a starter and all pagid stuff would only be around £100, so I'm saving £350 right there. Stealer prices!

I bought pagid disks and pads from ECP with a 30% discount. Much cheaper than OEM and I've been happy with them.

Yeah, probably gonna go Pagid. Interesting that ECP's current sale prices are the same as carparts4less regular prices.

From having done MkII golf brakes without too much hassle, just wondering how much different my octy ones are gonna be and if they have any known problems in terms of things being awkward about them.

My indy changed everything for me and he said the rear carrier bolts were an absolute pig to get off. Seen a few similar comments on here. Might be tricky to get the leverage if you don't have a ramp.

There is a pad warning light for the front only -- works only when the pads are really worn, and it is worth mentioning that the pad warning light CAN be disabled with VCDS so it doesn't work at all.

Personally I would change pads long before any warning light comes on.

Mike - can you advise where in VCDS I can permanently disable the pad warning light?

I need to do this on a Yeti. The pads are fine. Just the damn line to the sensor is broken.

The sensor is on the nearside front only.

Some of these so called "intelligent" system controls are a PITA.

I think I may have found the answer to the area in VCDS I was looking for:
