Little bit of help for a 1st time octy owner

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Bought a 2002 1.9 tdi mk1 octavia last monday, love the car so far but just having a few little niggles with it. firstly abs light is on, brakes work fine whilst it is on but when the abs light goes off the brake pedal judders quite loudly. also fitted my heko wind delflectors tonight and when i got in the car to go out to work the handbrake light flashed and beeped 3 times at me, it is constantly on whilst I am driving, have had a quick search of the forum and checked the brake fluid level, it is very full. doesnt appear to affect the braking but it is annoying as it is always on! also cant get glovebox light to work. was also wondering what mileage people were getting from a full tank. Thanks in advance for help and advice.

Hi Becky, Welcome to the oil burning Octy Club :)

The handbrake light/beep might just be the switch under the centre console after failing,

so it doesnt know the handbrake is off, or a blown fuse - which could potentially be the abs fault as well....

From a full tank, My average has been around 58 - 60 mpg, or around 650mls per tank, for the last 2 yrs.

Hi, thanks for the reply, whereabouts is the fuse for the abs and handbrake switch, I only got 500miles before the fuel light came on but when I fill the tank the needle didnt go all the way to the top, but to be honest I could of driven it more economically but I am enjoying having a 1.9 again after my 1.1 saxo. :)

Thanks, will have a look tomorrow and hopefully that will solve my issues :)

The fuse for the abs is on top of the battery in the engine bay, there's a little black cover you lift up, it's quite common for the fuse holders on top of the battery to get brittle and the electrical contacts get a bit green and corroded with age, if you give them a clean and the fuses too often this solves the problem of the abs.

you can test the handbrake switch wiring by unplugging the connector on the base of the handbrake lever and insert a hair pin to join the 2 wires together, this should make the handbrake light go off on the dash. It is quite tricky to get to the connector though.

Didnt realise the ABS was in the battery box   noted for the future
