Piggyback fuse into USB = RF interference on radio

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Yesterday I installed a dual USB 12-5V converter, running off a piggyback fuse plug into my Fabia. This was so I could hard wire in a dash cam and a charging cable for my phone. Today I find that the radio is suffering for a great deal of RF interference which is due to the USB cable running up the side of the windscreen in the pillar. Is there anything I can do to shield the aerial cable for the USB power cable allowing them to work in perfect harmony?

Advice gratefully received.

Have you tried piggybacking from different fuse locations?

Mine's piggybacked from the rear wiper, with no issues or interference on the rare occasions I do use the radio.

I'll give that a go. Currently tapped into the fuel pump fuse. I've routed one of the USB cables under the dash to emerge beside the steering column, so I wonder whether it is in close proximity to the radios antenna cable. Does anyone know where the antenna cable routes to the roof?

Chip,

Thanks for the suggestions, however I've not made any alterations to the stock car radio, so would be reluctant to install an inline noise suppressor. This would also preclude the usage of the ground loop isolator as i'm not using RCA inputs into the radio.

I've today looked at the installation. I've got a large fuse piggback, so not able to go off the rear wiper. I've tried off the fuel pump and internal fan fuses with the same problem. I suspect it is something to do with the cheap Chinese 12v - 5v USB converter generating noise with the stepdown to 5v.

Does anyone know if I can install something in the existing setup to reduce noise in the circuit?

Cheers

Will
