Gear stick nit centering?

Featured Replies

Hi recently I have noticed that after the cars got upto temp and driven a few miles the gear selector doesnt appear to center itself.

I have had a look under the gaitor at the spring and cant see anything obvious, althought the grease does look a little dry. Would this be the issue?

Thanks.

May not help but worth a try- my old mans vrs did this and it ended up being the ball sockets on the gear linkages had just seized up. Stripped them down and lubed them up, put it back together sorted it right out. We thought it was going to be something much more sinister but turned out just 10 mins of fettling sorted it.

Thanks I was hoping its something like this, get really paranoid with the gearbox and clutch when it starts acting strange.

Will invest in some lube and have a go at it myself.

Thanks again. :)

No probs, just hope it helps

I have this issue when everything gets hot. It does sort itself eventually.

I think it's the springs and joints on top of the gearbox. They get a bit dry and nasty in there. Lube them up a bit, and I'm sure it'll be okay. You can get in through the gap between the airbox, battery cover and engine.

That's exactly where we did, sounds promising to be a common one then :)

Mine is the same, except it doesn't centre when it's cold too.

Yesterday I put some grease on the ball socket under the gear shift and I then re-calibrated the gear linkages (using the youtube clip).

It feels smoother, but still doesn't centre.

I noticed that the youtube clip guy just presses down on the gear change mechanism that's in the engine bay, and it pops right back up.

Mine doesn't do this.

I'm considering changing the gearbox oil next.  Not sure if that's going to fix it either.
