Best way to insure old car until I sell it?

Featured Replies

My Octavia should arrive next week and I will be selling my car privately instead of trading it in. Just trying to figure out the best way of sorting out the insurance?

My current car is insured until June which should give me enough time to flog it, but ideally I'd want to use my 8 years no claims for my Octavia.

The only solution I can think of is to insure the Octavia on a new policy and then when I've finally sold my old car to cancel that policy and take out a new one with the no claims off my old cars policy?

Just wondered if there are any other better options?

Why insure two cars in the first place, unless you intend to use it on the public road, or parking old car on public road?

Because surely it needs to be insured for someone to be able to take it for a test drive when selling it privately? Also I need a bit of overlap with the two cars because my Octavia is getting detailed when I get it which will take a couple of days, although I think Skoda offer 7 days free insurance but I think that is mostly so they can tax it straight away?

The usual solution is to swap the main cover over to the Octavia for the remainder of the policy term and add the old car as a temporary additional vehicle until it is sold.

Your policy is unlikely to provide for allowing test drives and even if the other driver has the 'Driving Other Cars' extension to their policy (your vehicle has to be insured in its own right for this to be effective) their cover will be third party only, so bear that in mind.

Thanks Chris, I guess I'll have to ring up my current provider and see what options they offer. I know last time they charged an admin fee just for changing my address so god knows what it will cost to swap cars and add my current one as an additional car.

I did just that when I sold my old car privately, it cost £25 for 2 weeks parallel cover.

Suggest you put your car up for sale before you take delivery of the new one to get the ball rolling and minimise any dual ownership period
