What's the best tyres to use on mk1 octavia for castle combe

Featured Replies

Hi all was just wondering what tyres to use on my mk1 octavia vrs standard wheels so 17s for castle combe in September also do I need all 4 tyres or can I just get away with just changing the fronts ?

Any tyres.

If you are buying new ones for the day, don't use road tyres as track days and new tyres are not a good idea as they wear heavilly due to the deep tread and the blocks moving around.

If you are buying track day tyres you want a set of four, different grip levels on the front and back is not idea.

Federal RSR are popular as they are quite good and not excessively expensive.

In all honestly road tyres are fine.  Just keep used road tyres on.

I've never used track day tyres at Combe.  Always used road tyres so far and haven't struggled... overtaking people on track day tyres. :D

80%+ of the people use road tyres.

Black ones made of rubber should do the trick :D

In all seriousness, it depends on how hard you want to push things and how many track days you have done before.

As above the Federal 595 RS-R's are not a bad tyre for the money, but the best tyres I have used are either Toyo R888 or the Yoko A048 but the toyo's are more than twice the price of the 595's and the Yoko's around 3 times the price.

If you can afford them, I would recomend federal RSR's :)http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Federal/595RSR.htm

I'm about to write my review for them now Ive done a few thousand miles and a track day :)

They look good mate would I need all 4 or could I just get away with the fronts and how many miles will it take to brake them in cos I've heard the track will destroy brand new tyres?

Bossfox answered that for you ;) the RSR's will be fine after a few hundred miles ;)

and boss, you overtake everyone else because you are a lunatic! ;) :P

If you are planning doing more trackdays invest in a second set of wheels with trackday tyres such as Toyos, Yokohamas.   You may find a set with used tyres (ebay or Briskoda sales) works out about the same price as changing to new tyres on your existing wheels.

Don't mix completely different tyres on your car, on the road  or track.

Agreed. I've got a 2nd set of wheels for the track. Even though I used my road wheels last time out at combe because rain was promised, and never arrived.

I have kumho ecsta v70a track tyres and they are brilliant. I chose the soft compound and they are phenomenal :)

I had the medium compound v70a's on my octy but there too soft, and did not last very long at all.

Would need the hard compound but in a 225/45/17 (octy size) there a bmw control tyre so almost impossible to buy :(

Yes, Ecstas are very soft,   ideal for a light car but will only last 2 or 3 trackdays on a normal car.

Vredenstein Ultrac sessanta's are an excellent road tyre that perform well on track. But as previously posted not advisable to use new road tyres on track. My Vreds have done five track days now and still have plenty of life left.

Waits for the "your not pushing hard enough comments then" replys !
