Engine management / EGR valve / warning light... Help!

Featured Replies

OK, long story short...

Been having a warning light on intermittently, Engine management warning light. Fault code said EGR valve, so had new one fitted. Warning light on all the time now, after being re-set several times... This fault in itself doesn't seem to affect day-to day motoring, or at least didn't until...

Now, the car has intermittently started losing power at around 3000 rpm in 3rd, typically when pulling out to overtake once thoroughly warmed up. Doesn't do it when still fairly cool. Turning ignition off and back on again cures it, but it's happening intermittently. Not good.

I've heard that the EGR valve can be bypassed, but does anyone know roughly how expensive this is, and if there's anyone in the Halifax area who could do this?

Really wish there was a way of bypassing the engine management altogether, but doubt this is possible...

Car is a 1.9TDi estate, 04-plate, with 210,000 on the clock. Mechanically still very good although there's a diesely smell now, probably worn pump / injectors. I need to keep it running though if I can, as I have nowt towards another car!

Any advice appreciated!

Rick.

Sounds like sticky turbo vanes to me. Do a search.

Well, had a pleasant surprise the other day! I ran the fuel down til I had about 85 miles worth left in it, and added a full bottle of Redex (ie. a double dose).

Took it out and absolutely thrashed the knackers off it on the moors near me, something I loathe doing. Red-line in 1st, 2nd & 3rd, kept giving it a real booting.

Took it over to my Girlfriend's last night (15 miles), and the Engine Management warning light went out... "OK" thought me, it'll be back on either on the way home (as it usually does after about 10 miles), or in the morning...

So far, I've just come to work (18 miles), and the turbo isn't sticking, and the Engine Management warning light hasn't come back on. Even though I've been dosing it with Redex in each tank full since the problem started, I think there's even more "go" in it now!

Also, the diesely smell doesn't seem as apparent.

So, I wonder if it's cleaned a sensor somewhere which is now behaving correctly and giving me the correct mixture?

Either way, it seems to have cured it! I'll keep an eye on it.

As it's a diesel there is no correct mixture - diesel burns in an excess of air. Redex may have cleaned the injectors, but won't have survived combustion, so won't have reached the EGR or turbo.

It would be wise to have the car scanned for fault codes.

Redex

I watched an old 5th gear test on fuel additives, its on YouTube... They all did nothing but lose horsepower....except redex.... It slightly increased horsepower...interesting...
