Mk1 TDI cam pulley location

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have just removed my cylinder head today to skim and replace gasket. it is an ASV engine and I had to remove the cam pulley to get the head off.

there is no keyway on the pulley or on the cam shaft, it just locates on a taper.

question is, how do I get the cam pulley back in exactly the right location when I come to re-assemble?

do I pull the timing belt between the cam and diesel pump to locate the cam position then tighten the pulley onto the cam?

the cam shaft was locked in the relative to TDC position and the diesel pump is also locked

cheers,

ian

As long as you locked the cam at the other end at tdc and locked the injection pump and crank you should be fine.

but I have removed the cam pulley to remove the cylinder head, the cam pulley needs to be back in exactly the same place?

No. When you change the belt you break the pulley loose from the can so that it can move a bit when you tension the belt.

ah, so when I come to re-fit the belt, get it all in place and tensioned up then nip up the cam?

I did not loosen the cam last time I did the belt as I did not have the tools.

have you had much experience with head gasket going on these? I started getting bubble and foam building up in the expansion tank, done a block test and exhaust in coolant present!

gasket actually looks ok - going to skim the head to be on the safe side as I'm that far in with it. current gasket has one notch so would I be ok to go up a notch (thicker gasket)

Yes nip up the cam once the belt is on and tensioned, IIRC

Not got any experience of HGF, mine was completely reliable.

Before you skim the head, you need to know what thickness HG you need. There are three OEM thicknesses to match the piston projection. If after the head is skimmed, the PP is more than 1.2mm you will need a custom HG.
