Rapid Spaceback Instrument Cluster illumination

Featured Replies

Hi All

One minor irritation with my Spaceback is that there is no control on the dashboard for adjusting the illumination level of the instruments or minor controls. Usually on a VW-group dashboard, the control for headlamp levelling is adjacent to that for adjusting the instrument cluster illumination.

Is there any other way of adjusting it? Having said that, the contrast between white characters on a black background seems to be fine so far.....

Mmmm I know what you mean. My Mark 1 Fabia had it but my Mark 2 didn't.

My Spaceback does not have it and I know of no way to adjust it, but then I haven't looked in the book to see.

I suspect it is a cost-cutting design removal, along with the boot corner dividers.

Boot corner dividers weren't removed by design, only by Skoda UK.

Yes, you are quite correct Ronnie, Skoda UK thought it would be a good wheeze to exclude the corner dividers so that they could sell the boot netting as an extra.... Unfortunately for me I frequently have to carry folding wheelchairs and zimmer frames which would get tangled up in the nets. I will make my own!

The old adjuster for instrument cluster illumination brightness was I think a simple variable resistor which adjusted the voltage/current (delete as appropriate, my electronics = very rusty) to the backlight for the cluster appropriately, with the MaxiDot being LCD though the backlight will work differently I should imagine.

Does anybody know if you can alter the MaxiDot brightness on other models? I'm thinking more along the lines of Fabia II which has a similar 'cut down' MaxiDot to the Rapid as opposed to the more feature rich variant fitted to the Octavia and above.

Hi All

Thanks for your replies. It looks like no adjustments are possible, then ....

Having grumbled bout this, I drove the car last night along some city streets and some dual carriageway out of town. There was a full moon and the sky was clear, but I noticed that my headlights lit up the road quite well and the white instrument lighting didn't cause any problems. I'll reserve judgement until I get an opportunity to drive at night in rain or poor visibility.

On the thorny subject of the boot corner dividers, I've been wondering whether to make my own. I could make a cardboard template and test fit and tweak it for a good fit - easy enough - but am not sure what material I would use for the permanent fix, yet.

Perhaps plastic moulded, I'm sure a few of us would be interested in a group buy.
