On the way to Wales, kayak on roof and FULL trailer on tow the Yeti started to make a knocking noise when on constant throttle that would go faster and slower depending on the speed of the car. None when accelerating, none when coasting with no pedal being pressed and it did so from cold or hot. I was sooooo scared coming back we were going to break down with all that kit on and behind the car...

 

Also it did not do this when you applied same constant throttle when parked in Neutral. So it had to be driveshafts I reckoned as if it was the engine it would have done the noise when in N too. Booked it in yesterday at Preston Motors in London.

 

They found LOTS of mud - which was from many months ago. Oops...  They cleaned that out and disassembled the entire front drive shaft(s) - not sure both or just one - and they found a twig in there. Took that out and voila perfect Yeti. I was so scared it was going to be a big thing like a gearbox or something. So £107's labour later - one hour - and it's fixed and ready to tow The Turtle at the end of the month to Wales.

Yup! I was VERY happy to spend ONLY £107. I was expecting a bill far, far higher than that!

When I was young I never gave mechanical reliability much thought but now I can't bring myself to flog it because I feel something expensive will fail big time at great cost.

I've learnt that taking a Golf off road is not a good idea...  The Yeti might be capable but I won't be taking it off road in earnest again any time soon.

Think you need to adjust your mirror a bit

Too old.

I get the feeling cars are increasingly becoming disposable/recyclable white goods designed for low emissions and a short lifespan.

No can't remember him having had such a problem. I was in Penpont near Brecon first week in May and going to Llanrwst in north Wales over the Bank Holiday. :-)

Just proves the Yeti is an excellent machine.
