Hub runout

Featured Replies

I have a 2004 vrs that has a lot of vibration when braking. Does anyone know what the recommended maximum runout on the hub itself is? Mine have a runout of 0.1mm which is causing a runout of 0.25mm on the discs.

Any help would be appreciated.

Think I have this problem on mine, how do you measure the runout?

I used a DTI on a magnetic base that I attached to the shock absorber.

What tyre size are you running on the wheels?

Sorry for my ignorance, but what's a DTI?

A Dial Test Indicator. It's used to measure the run out on a surface.

So something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-DTI-STAND-WITH-MAGNETIC-BASE-DIAL-GAUGE-METRIC-TEST-INDICATOR-CLOCKS-/201051214429?pt=UK_Measuring_Tools_Levels&hash=item2ecf96125d

Might have to invest.

I have changed wheels, tyres and discs & pads (Several times) and now calipers and still the vibrations come back on the same wheel. So my suspicions have now turned to the hub. :wonder:

At least it gave me an excuse to fit a Mk6 Golf GTI front brake set up

Yeah that will do the job. Always handy to have to be certain everything is running 'true'.

It's far more likely to be a top mount and/or console bush that's causing the vibration under braking.

Mine had slight vibration under braking and replacing the rear bushes in the lower arms with Audi TT ones solved it.

Strangely though on mine if you change the disc it goes away and then creeps back slowly over a couple of thousand miles, so I'm guessing not due to knackered bushes?

I'm going to change my discs again to eliminate that, if there is a wobble still, I will get the discs skimmed on the car to ensure the discs are running true to the hubs. If there is still a wobble I will know it's suspension or bush related and will work through that!

Ever thought of taking car to the garage for them to check-out all your suspension bushes etc.

Tell them what you have done to eliminate problem, before spending anymore cash and wild guessing?

The car is worked on at my friends garage and all my bushes have been checked recently with my arb bushes and drop links being changed. My wishbone bushes were OK. I still think the problem is the hubs personally but these are a lot more expensive to replace than getting the discs skimmed on the car, so I will start with that.
