Mobility Scooters

Featured Replies

I see someone has been killed again after a collision between a mobility scooter and a car.

I don't know if the scooter was 'driven' on the road, but there are so many people who do drive these on the road. They shouldn't be on the road, and I feel for lorry drivers who really can't see them.

Thoughts?

There are ones that are for driving on roads,

different classes of Motability Scooters.

Requirement for an orange Beacon etc, and DVLA registered.

There also the Elderly

& Infirm that have not a clue and need trained and should have Insurance.,

Bloody nuisance around here I can confirm, usually driven by pension louts

Whatever happened to those far more acceptable (IMO)  and safer blue invalid carriages?

My mum has an electric wheel chair, it has a V5, road tax (£0), insurance and lights/indicators.

There are many many places where the pavement is simply NOT suitable. My mum tries to use the pavement but often finds that while she can get on at a ramp, she comes to a junction where there is no ramp and so no way to get down. There is also no guarantee that the pavement is going to be wide enough, and her path is often blocked by street 'furniture' (clutter!).

I suggest you walk around your home town pretending you have wheels and are a few ft wide... see how far you get before you need to use the road :)

Blue Invalid Carriages were for War Injured & others.

Rather a different thing from the Mobility of the General Public in this century that do have the need some for some means of assisting them to get around.

I appreciate that, but being covered, quicker and more visible, I actually think they were/are a lot safer than these low powered electric  go karts that are darting around all over the place now.

Come close to being knocked over by one at a show recently

You must never have driven one, i worked on them before they were discontinued

& the Motability Scheme came in.

They are not going to work that well in a Shopping Compex or Town Centre shopping.

Things like a Renault Twizy might suit some better for travelling short distances in towns on the roads.

True.

Twizzy is good...and cool.

But should they be on busy roads through towns? I can understand side streets possibly. They are a hazard as they can only travel at slow speeds.

The elderly that use them do not seem to realise they are a danger not only to themselves but other road users.

The Elderly had to live a long time to become Elderly, so they have done quite well up to now

& many Mobility Scooter users are not Elderly,

and might never live long enough to become old.

Maybe the young should cut them some slack,

allow them to dotter about,  just slow down and give them space.

Lifes too short,

well apart for those that already have spent 70 years or more on this Earth.

Those that made the contributions that mean there are roads and pavements for all.

Sure I saw a case of one of these being pulled up by the rozzers on a motorway down south a couple of years ago after dumb struck motorists rang 999. :D

They are much less of a hazard than a dithering old timer in a Fabia that takes up the whole road and more as they merrily swerve over the road, pull out in front of people and generally pay little mind to what's going on around them!

Maybe you should just calm down a bit and give them some consideration? Same for cyclists, horses, children and pedestrians... all vulnerable road users that we, as motorists in our 1T+ rolling death wagons, should be looking out for.

As a side note, my mum took her electric chair to Columbia (on her own, staying in hostels and 'couch surfing'), and found people much more accepting of it than in the UK, found it easier to transport (generally lifted in to the back of a pickup) and drove it around on the roads without a major issue in her 7 weeks there!

Celica VVti ey, you lucky sod.

Lovely car. Had many Celica's in the 70's/80's.

Sorry. COMPLETELY off topic....carry on.

No doubt some of them are used safely and correctly but everyone I have personally seen on the roads have been driven by someone who seemingly isnt capable of being in control of it. Here in MK we have redways covering the whole town running parallel to the roads, yet some of them seem to think the best option is to go down a 70mph road at 8mph instead. Some think this is a good idea at night......with no lights on.

The bonus of the old **** in the Fabia driving like a **** is that he'll have his licence revoked if he is that bad and will probably have done a test to show he is capable to drive the car. Unlike some of the people in these electric scooters who dont seem to have even been given some advice or have any common sense. One woman on my bus said how a car driver honked at her for pulling out in front of him so she weaved across the road in front of him! I asked if she thought that was safe she said he has brakes?! Yet the poor sod who hits her will be the one having nightmares for life.

As far as electric wheelchairs go, the ones I've seen are tremendously manoeuvrable, they get on and off our buses without an issue (tight gaps) so I suspect theres very few paths that would stop them. In saying that, I've never seen one with a V5 & tax/lights though?! Sounds more hardcore than a electric wheelchair.

This owld graunch is now taking bookings for mobo driving scooter lessons.  :D

Hmm no it is an electric wheel chair, it can get on buses if they are ramp equipped (not all and its generally quite hard to pin down which have ramps and which don't before the bus arrives). There are many pavements that are unsuitable, have no ramps, cars parked on them, too narrow etc. I know this because I've been out with my mum when she uses it. How do you know it didn't have a V5? They don't have them stuck to the front. I know my mums does because my name is on it as I bought it. Meet the MC3:

A user, just like any 'normal' road user, can get told off by the police, they have to follow the rules of the road just like any other driver. The devices are not cheap so they probably have insurance for them as well.

An idiot is an idiot, whether they are in a chair, on a bike, behind the wheel of a car, bus or lorry, riding a horse or just on foot. We should remove the idiots from the road without using the blunt instrument of removing a whole class of road users.

I was actually going to say Peugeot as that tends to be the car of choice for such drivers, but I thought I'd say Fabia to rattle some cages :P

Go get one, they are very cheap :P

We had training on them, we were told (could of course be wrong, and I wouldnt be surprised if it was) class 3 scooters/wheelchairs need lights/speedo as per the following link:

https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=3&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CGgQFjAC&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gov.uk%2Fgovernment%2Fuploads%2Fsystem%2Fuploads%2Fattachment_data%2Ffile%2F211031%2Fadvice-for-mobility-vehicle-users.doc&ei=uCR1U9CQO4TH7AbLg4GIBw&usg=AFQjCNHB27Rq0Wjnf0q7oXcNFRl-04UL4A&bvm=bv.66699033,d.ZGU

While I didnt ask to see the V5, I didnt see lights, speedo, tax disc and the passenger said they couldnt use it on the road when I was talking to them? The one in the photo looks more or less identical to the one on the bus and in training, maybe your mums is just tuned up to go quicker? :D I guess I dont realise how lucky we are down here with reasonable paths and access.

I'm not denying that any user can get 'told off' by the police, but only someone with a licence can have that revoked if their driving is dangerous. I didnt say we should remove them all, I was thinking more of giving them some training and a bit more responsibility for their actions so that it's safer for all.
