Booming from rear windows

Featured Replies

Hi

Does anyone else with an estate have a really bad booming if one of the rear windows is fully open at speed.

I've never experienced the effect so badly as on the octavia, so much so my mates are now calling the car the "AIR HAMMER".

Any ideas to reduce it would be great. Don't know if wind deflectors would help. Personally I don't like the look but would consider a set if it sorted the issue.

Cheers

Happens on mine. And it happened on my previous car (Nissan Qashqai) just as bad. Don't really find it an issue to be honest you just have to open one of the front windows a little.

There's a thread (a few I think) on here somewhere with the resolution, it's caused by the parcel shelf I believe.

I get it as well.  Simple solution is not to open the back window, it's a good excuse for me to lock them therefore my 7 year old can not play with them!!

Sounds like Aerodynamic buffeting.

Our Yeti also does it.

Try opening the opposite front window by small increments.

All cars do it. Turbulence within the cabin. Where is the air going to go when it enters the car at 60 mph? It's going to swirl round the cabin like a b@stard. How can anybody be surprised when this happens? EVERY car I have ever had did it. As others have said, just open another window and the ear drum buffeting is gone or reduced.

Open two windows... Job done :-)

Keep them closed and the climate control.  I can't remember when I last opened a window on a car apart from getting through car park barriers......

Mine does it too.  It varies depending on speed and how open it is, but as others have said, if you open the opposite front window it goes away.

I had deflectors on my Fabia which cured it totally.  I'm considering them for the Octy too, but I found they made the A pillar appear very thick as they are not as transparent as the makers claim.

Mine does it too as my previous cars did (Opel Astra F and G, VW Golf 4 and 5). All combis/estates.

It's not a fault of Octy 3 :)

WTF do you do with the empty dounuts bag then

Now there's an option for those without the Canton subwoofer… open window, refine speed so buffeting occurs at 146bpm, put on your drum'n'bass cd, and hey ho!

Cr*p idea if you're into classical.

… or just don't open the window fully!

Thanks, looks like I'll be looking for some wind deflectors then.

As I said before, I've had it on other cars but never this bad.  Unfortunately some of my passengers smoke which I don't allow in the car but by way of keeping the peace I do put up with them using vaporisers/e-cigs which I still insist they open the window.

That's easily solved. It might help cure them of smoking too (especially with the recent 'spring showers' we've had) :D

I have Heko wind deflectors fitted, not for smokers, but for the dogs, I can have the rear windows open 30 - 40mm with little or no extra wind noise at motorway speeds.

I also noticed this last weekend when a passenger opened the rear window on the highway.

I have to say, the noise is very extreme on the Octavia compared with other cars I've had.

It's not just annoying its painful on the ears.

This is the first though with the pullout parcel shelf which may be the difference.

I've not read the previous thread about this but I think there are some cabin pressure issue with mk3, so I guess I'm happy that at least I don't have the same boom from the rear on rough roads like some do.

I've had estates on hire and never noticed it as bad, but I don't tend to have the windows open at all unless someone is "vaping".  A set of deflectors is looking like a serious option.

I thought the rough road thing was related to the rear suspension setup on the normal Octy, which the vRS and 4x4 differ from the normal car as they have multilink rather than torsion beam.

Just a question, what do you do with the empty donuts bag?
