Reads the data the car is providing to the OBD port and transmits it over bluetooth or WiFi, depening on what adaptor you've gone for.  I believe iPhone can handle the WiFi ones but not bluetooth as Apple don't allow/support.

I've got a cheap mini bluetooth one from amazon and talks to my Lumia 920 WP no problems.  The app i use is called 'Car Dash' and can show boost, thottle positon and various temperatures amoungst other things (there's a lot of data it's providing!).  Personally I'm only interested in the boost and is very interesting to watch!

What I've found though is that running the app and all this data is fairly power intensive so like to keep the phone pluged in.

I've used torque app in the vrs and my tt before it with no issues. It's good for displaying data on custom gauge configurations.

For fault codes it's not so good, a bit hit and miss and I believe it only reads the engine ecu. Modern vags have multi ecus afaik which will not be read.

I got my Bluetooth obdII adapter on eBay for about a fiver, it plugs in to the socket behind the panel below the steering wheel...next to the drl switch.

Thanks mate. Much better understanding now :-) It sounds very cool, and it's sounds like a nice cheap setup too! so think I'll have to invest in one now :-).

Thanks Matt, much appreciated. I've only looked on eBay so far, so will check out amazon. Looks like I'll need a wifi one now because of bloody Apple :-(

There are to many to pick from, which ones are people using? Link?

I've got this one:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/TIMETOP-Bluetooth-Interface-Scanner-Diagnostic/dp/B00DY3EZSI/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1401276881&sr=8-3&keywords=OBD+bluetooth

They're are many different ones on amazon, varying quality and price.  First one I got stopped working after 2 weeks.  Second one has been ok so far!

But you get what you pay for I suppose.  And from doing a bit of research, they all use ripped off ELM protocol!

BUT the mini ones mean you can keep it plugged in and place the fuse panel cover back on at the same time.

Just a word of warning if you decide to make use of the CD that comes with them, A few have mentioned in the reviews that this has shown to contain malware.

do the dealers get the hump if they find one of these in the port if you forget to remove it before service?

No need for Dealers to get the hump,

you own the car & pay them to do what you ask.

But if you want them to do a Diagnostic Check and a ECU update, they might not want to remove something,

so best not leave it plugged in.

Or ask them not to do Diagnostics and updates if you dont want them.

Warranties & Manufacturers Guidelines on Service schedules is different,

but using your OBD should not Void a Warranty.
