Front window screen...gap?

Featured Replies

I noticed while washing the car properly for the first time since I owned my vRS estate that there is couple mm gap about 100 mm long at the bottom of the front windscreen (plastic strip that covers the lower windscreen from side to side). To me this doesn't seem good as the water will obviously run down the screen and through this gap. I think it's in between both wiper arms.

Need to get a pic to show. Not seen this pop up on the forum before - anyone got any experience of this?

Could it just be the scuttle panel (the 2 pieces of black plastic that the wiper spindles pop up through) isn't pushed down flush against the windscreen?  If not, maybe I am mis-understanding your description.  Sure a picture would help out.

Hi,

i am a windscreen fitter so can hopefully help. The scuttle panel simply clicks into a plastic rail that is attached to the bottom of the windscreen, they do sometimes pop out but its easy to sort. Just press firmly with your thumb(s) just below the top of the panel until you hear a faint clicking sound. It may take abit of force to push it in but the screens are pretty tough so dont worry too much about breaking the glass. if it still doesnt go in then dont worry too much as there are a coupe of gaps in the plastic rail that allow the water to drain through when it goes behind it.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the info I finally got some time to get some pics. @AdamH55 I tried to push down quite hard but its not sticking or going back in to place. Probably been open like that for some time. I peaked underneath and looks like there is a lot of dust and dirt so I maybe have to remove and try and refit - easy to do?

Looks a bit mangled...wipers off, scuttle off and have a better look?

Almost looks as if the rubber sealing strip isn't properly attached to the main plastic section.....

If you do decide to pull off the scuttle panels, remember to clean out any leaves and the like from the drainage holes .  By design, water will run off the windscreen, and into the ends of the scuttle area and then down around the rear of the front wheel arch liners (this is well known to fill up with compost from old leaves, twigs, etc)

Can I just but in here as I have the same sort of problem. Sorry to be rude

I have noticed on my front screen that I have a small gap between the rubber seals on the left and right side of the screen, the seal has no breaks or wear. Is this normal to have this small gap as I don't think it is as there seems to be a whistling noise when I get over 50ish mph. I thought the seals should be flush with the screen and body.

Any help guys n girls

It looks as though somebody has maybe pumped some white silicone between the window and scuttle panel, either that or my eyes are going. I would suggest popping off the scuttle panel and having a better look, easy to do. 2 13mm nuts holding the wipers on, then pull off the rubber strip towards bottom of panel and the scuttle itself comes off in 2 parts. Its likey to be clicked into the retainer on the bottomo of the screen but it pulls out pretty easily. If there is any silicon there then pull it off. On the back off the scuttle panel there will be a thin line of plastic sticking out which is what clicks into the retainer on the screen. spray it with some glass cleaner and it should click into the rail easily. If this doesnt work then all i can suggest is the retainer has come off the screen and/or is damaged inside.

drew_smith i cant think what rubber seals or on either side of the screen? There should be a plastic trim running from roof line to scuttle panel down each side. Even if these are missing though it shouldnt cause any noise inside the car. The noise usually suggests there is a gap in the glue line across the bottom which unfortunately means the windscreen will need to be removed and refitted to sort the problem.
