Changing alternator brands

Featured Replies

Got a Valeo alternator on my car which is looking like it has failed. Found out through TPS that Valeo and Bosch were OEM options.

Could I replace my Valeo with a Bosch option?

I'm assuming only 1 option for the ribbed belt is available so only thing I can think that may be different is the pulley diameter. But surely the tensioner will make adjustments for any size difference?

Pulley is a standard size.  Certainly when I replaced mine, I didn't know what alternator I had fitted (when I ordered it)

I just replaced the old crap Valeo alternator with a propper Bosch wich is much stronger and reliable.

Is a direct swap with no mods needed.

Cheers for the replies.

Alternator was bench tested today and the rotor circuit is open hence why I wasn't getting any charge to the battery.

Ordered a Bosch unit from TPS. The assistant there noted the pulley's didn't come with it so I've had the existing one taken off ready to be fitted to the replacement unit.

You'll need a special tool to remove the pulley, might be worth ordering a new pulley as the tend to be a PITA to remove.

Depending on the age/mileage of the pulley you might be better off investing in a new one.  Mine failed around the 180k mark, iirc.  Not sure if you are driving a diesel or not, as they have a free-wheel mechanism, which I don't believe the petrols have/need.

The firm who bench tested my alternator, removed, and will be refitting the pulley for me.

Car has 86k and is a petrol.
