Installing MDI

Featured Replies

Hey

Iv bought an Mdi Kit off a forum member. I thought it was a case of simply plugging in the wiring harness and off i go.

However, the stereo doesnt seem to recognise it.

I'll attach some pictures in a moment of what the plugs look like.

Should i need to swap any wires around? Or does it need coding in using vcds?

Help would be muchly appreciated :).

Cheers.

The first one is the cars plug (note theres a mini plug missing inside the main plug) and the second is the mdi harness, this has a few more connections on it.

Cheers guys.

It probably just needs enabling in vcds. The plugs look fine and the missing plug is not relevant to the mdi (its phone related and these days replaced by a separate loom to the BT module).

Oh right. Spot on. Cheers.

I'll put it in properly, then look for someone to code it.

I found a VW pdf document that shows swapping all different wires around into different holes. Confused me abit. Hmm.

I dont think you need to. The only wiring mods necessary are if you have an aux in or cd changer you wish to retain.

Ah sorry. Yeah. The car comes with a standard 3.5mm aux in near the handbrake. I would like to retain that.

I should have said before

No problem, its fairly easy and the wiring mod is at the mdi plug end.

You need to remove the aux in pins from the blue plug (pins 1, 2 and 7) in the car loom and put them into the mdi plug at pins (5, 11 and 6 respectively).  If you separate the loom to the blue plug, you should find these three wires are in a separate shielded cable which can be redirected to the mdi plug.

You will then have aux in when selecting mdi and the mdi is not connected.

Cheers mate. Much appreciated.

Ill whip the stereo out again tonight, route the mdi loom and spent a little while getting my head around the wires.

Cheers again :)

Read your post about 100 times tonight while i went through it with my thinking head on. Iv swapped the wires around and put the mdi box in the bottom glovebox temporarily.

So i just need someone to activate it on vcds now.

Just to clarify. Doing it this way, will i still get the 'aux' and 'cd' options when i press the 'media' button? Will i just get an extra one saying 'mdi' too?

Mdi will replace aux but aux will be available when mdi is not connected. Do you have a cd changer?

Ooh right i see :).

Nah no cd changer for me. Just the single cd player thsts built into the head unit, so i dont think thats a problem?

Cheers again. Youve been most helpful :).

No its just the cd changer that gets lost, unless you add a wire. Hope it works when coded up. I'm not sure where you are as on phone but if anywhere near South East Wales happy to hook it up for you...

Thatd be fantastic mate, but unfortunately im in Buxton, Derbyshire. So miles away haha.

Iv just asked somebody to have a look to see if he can code it for me.

He says it requires an 8 digit binary code, of which 4 are listed, or something like that?

Any idea what the code is i require?

Thanks :).

Edit: scrap that. Hes found a post which explains all. Hopefully thats it.

Cheers for all your help. I'll keep it updated and update this thread once its sorted. Just incase it comes in helpful for anybody else

Just as a final post to help anybody in the same situation.

I got this sorted today. It was a case of going seeing a very kind forum member and asking him nicely to hook it up to vcds to activate the MDI.

It took him about 5 minutes really. He says he followed the following:

Controller 19 CAN Gateway : Installation list : 2E Media Player 3

Then switched off the ignition, switched it back on and mdi was there as an option when i press 'media' on the headunit.

It works brill :). Like you said, if the usb pendrive is inserted, that takes priority. I can then browse through the media files on the head unit and choose what i want to play. Then if i unplug the usb drive, it automatically reverts back to 'aux'.

Im very happy with this, its brill :). Just need somewhere to hide the MDI box now and make it a more perminant installation.

Thanks again for your help.

Ps, he also activated needlesweep for me! Woo! Haha.

Good stuff mate glad its working.
