Tyre Advice Please

Featured Replies

My 1.6 TDI Octavia has just about worn its original front tyres out. (Dunlop SP Sport 01)

The tyres that are on the car form new are V rated. However when i put the reg no. in any of the online tyre retailers it comes up with H rated.

There is nothing in the handbook that specifies V rated so can i use H rated as obviously they are a bit cheaper and still rated to 130 mph, which the car will not trouble anyway???

When it comes to tyres i am looking at choosing one of the following two:-

Dunlop Sport Blu Response

or

Goodyear Efficientgrip Performance

Both seem to have great wet weather ratings, fuel efficiency ratings and noise levels.

But if anyone knows better then i am all ears.

Thanks

Remember that the tyre noise rating refers to noise measured at a certain distance from the car, NOT inside the car.

The actual test consists of a microphone being set up 7.5m from the centre-line of the car and at a height of 1.2m above the ground. When passing, the vehicle must be travelling at 50 mph with the engine turned off.

I can only give a good thumbs up for the Goodyear. They are a great all rounder, superb in wet and dry conditions, very good feedback and gives you lots of confidence when you need it. As for wear I cant make a fair comment as we do about 5k a set due to the conditions they are used in. Same with road noise as we have external equipment that makes noise above tyre roar.

We have Bridgestones on our own estate 1.6cr and cant wait to replace them with the Goodyears.

The speed rating change from "V" to an "H" is not too much of a concern on a standard car, you need to ensure you stick with the correct load rating though.

I would say any decent branded tyre "should" give reasonable all round practicability.

ive always loved the goodyear eagle f1 asymmetric 2s not run the others these lasted really well on a mapped 09 leon fr and i have a heavy right foot

+1 on the Goodyear EG I noticed a small increase in mpg with them and they were quieter. Plenty of grip but maybe a little less feel from them. That was on a VRS

Thanks for the replies chaps, looks like the Goodyear is the favourite so far. Just want some decent tyres as its not exactly a speed machine i am driving here. lol

I'm liking the EfficientGrip at the moment.

Getting good MPG from them since they were fitted. And wearing well + no sawtoothing.

I questioned the online guides recommending H ratings as opposed to V and decided to stick with V in light advice from a Skoda document (in German) and regarding insurance.

+1 for the Goodyears, got them all round on mine and as good as gold, however still to early to advise on longevity though. As for the speed rating, if you input your number plate into the black circles website it will recommend what speed rating and load are recommended for your vehicle, i.e 91 V

I used Blackcircles, KwikFit and several other online checkers and they all came back with a much lower speed rating than were on mine and different to the last time I bought tyres (about 18-24 months) when they all came up as '91 V' rating.

No idea why it had changed, but I decided to play safe and stick with 91 V.

I'll see if I can find the Skoda tyre document I have.

Checked again and Black Circles says 91 H when i put my reg no. in.

Another +1 for the Goodyear EG. Quieter and better mpg than the conti sc2 that the car came with. However handling isn't as good and the longevity is only slightly better 14k versus 12k from the SC2. This is on a VRS tdi.

Checked again and Black Circles says 91 H when i put my reg no. in.

They are just using a database.  if the data supplied to it is incorrect then the output will be just as incorrect.  Just use the "select your tyre size" input on the LHS.

Isn't the minimum speed & load rating on the placard inside the fuel flap?
