Horrible noise driving me crazy

Featured Replies

Hi guys!

Anyone with good intel on what's what on these cars who could give me a hint on what's causing the noise seen below?

It's only present when in reverse, and only when turning the wheel to it's maximum. Really weird. I've read other threads with people having similar issues and list of probably causes include non-withdrawn brake pads, trapped stones behind brake shield, bad servo pump, etc. Still, I haven't been able to narrow down my own search. Anyone with an idea?

Also, while on the case with bad noises. The sound that reminds you of a trapped insect that is heard in the beginning of the video, before she starts turning the wheel? It's due to a worn-out clutch, right? Just though I'd ask, even if this noise isn't 1% as irritating as the turning-in-reverse cacophony.

Cheers!

What engine is it?

1.9 TDI?

Funny thing you ask Phil, several people has told me that the car sounds like a diesel engine, but it's not. It's the 1,4/16v 'BBY' petrol engine, 75 hp.

Sounds like the brakes dragging to me.

I am not sure if it is the same situation, but I recently had an issue with my front breaks. I had my car lifted and I tried to spin the wheels by hand, for no reasons at all, and the front right one was rolling a bit harder than the left one. My mechanic found that the compensators were locked on that side, mostly because of dirt. He cleaned the breakes, both sides and he did a pretty good job.  Maybe this will help you.

The signes of a bad cluch are spinning when in (heavy) load, a bad smell and sometimes you can see smoke comming from under the bonet.

My housemate rides a bicycle to work and I always know when she gets home because I hear almost the same noise from her bike braking, albeit less ear-splitting. So uneven wear or binding pads or dirty brake surfaces maybe? Changing the pads might be a cheap first try at fixing it. Otherwise, a bent shield or bad wheel bearing putting friction on disc? I had that horrible trapped stone squeal after visiting a friend with a pebble driveway, it freed itself on drive home and rocketed out of the wheel with a thump.

Since it happens on turning, can't hurt to check power steering pump (although that whine sounds like an angry lawnmower to me) and rack. Could a bad clutch be causing the reverse gear to bind? I don't recall the noises of my bad clutch, just that it sounded different in a not-good way. Mostly I remember the car slipping on gear changes, not being able to get up a 50mph steep hill above second or third gear at 30mph and the terrible burning rubber smell when stuck in traffic. Good luck tracking down that noise!
