Changing a ball joint help!

Featured Replies

I need to change my front right ball joint and as I can get the part for less than 10quid I want to do it myself but is there any specialist tools needed? Does it need to be pressed into place?

No specialists tools as far as I can remember.  The three nuts a the bottom are 13mm .  The swivel is 18mm IIRC.

Undo the 3 bottom nuts & push the LCA downwards to give you room to work.  The LCA will want to jump back up so maybe run a strap or rope to the other side of the vehicle to hold it down.

partially undo the 15mm nut & depending on how much of a butcher you are either belt the taper with a 1kg hammer or use a balljoint fork.  If you know what I'm talking about you'll be right, if you don't then take it to a mechanic rather than cause yourself excessive heartache.

Good luck

When I changed mine I found that you can't remove the ball joint nut fully as it fouls on the CV joint body, after freeing the pin from the hub assembly (using the ball joint fork) the pin would rotate when trying to remove the nut. Nothing I used would hold the pin still and in the end used the angry grinder on it.

you can get ball joints for £10, but you get what you pay for.

a vw ball joint costs around £30, better to spend the extra cash and do the job right.
