Mysterious engine cut out/non-start

Featured Replies

I own an 07 Skoda Octavia 1.9TD Automatic. Delighted with it over years I've had it and no issues - until recently.

If ANYONE can steer me in the right direction re this, they would have my eternal thanks.

Recently, the car has been reluctant to start. It turns over fine but just won't catch. All the lights on the display light up at the same time.

When it does start, it is liable to cut out at slow speeds, e.g. at a junction. Apart from every indicator on the dashboard flashing, no specific fault light comes on.

Sometimes I can restart it it and other times I cannot. Of course, when I get it to a mechanic, it starts perfectly. No fault can be diagnosed when it starts OK.

So I'm in a difficult place - I have to wait for the fault to re-occur before it can be diagnosed. But I don't want to drive the car as it's liable to develop this problem at any time. I've already been towed to a garage once and, of course, it started perfectly when I got there.

Am rather desperate for some help.

First start simple.

Get your battery tested properly. These issues are more often than not caused by a dodgy battery.

Thanks Phil. Have done this already. It's fine!

Is that the original battery?

Have you also then checked the connections and leads to the battery.

We had a similar problem in our old car due to a faulty earth connection.

Also is there any pattern to it? I.e. only when hot/cold etc?

Will double check re connections.

Re pattern: it does seem to be worse when it's hot outside.

Have no idea whether this is relevant!

Also, and forgive my total lack of any mechanical/technical knowledge, would a faulty battery cause the engine to cut out at a low speed?

Yes. If the voltage drops below a certain ammount the computers and controllers can't work properly.

Our Cordoba 1.9 TDI kept cutting out and wouldn't restart until I wiggled the connection on the battery.

Check engine earth condition, check alternator output, then scan for faults.

Feedback in case anyone comes across this problem in the future!

After much investigation, appears fault caused by malfunctioning relay located on top of where the fuses are.

This discovered by process of elimination as I never managed to get a fault code to appear on any computer readers.

The part number of my old one was 8DO951253 and it's a 4-pin relay with "370" stamped on the side in black.

Ordered a new one and it seems that this part number has been superseded twice (which to my mind means they knew there was an issue with it). New part number is K4HO951253.

Hope no-one else suffers this problem but this might provide a solution.

Is that the dreaded relay 109 which afflicted Octabia diesels, cutting off fuel IIRC?
