Those Folding Mirrors

Featured Replies

Stuck in a narrow road with oncoming traffic I tried to fold in my mirrors with

the caravan towing extension mirrors, nothing happened!

Can I yank them in by hand?

I also saw a 136bhp Yeti whose mirrors retracted when he turned off the ignition!

can I set my mirrors up to do this?

*edit the key was still in the ignition but OFF

I can manually fold mine in on F/L SE spec. The key was not in the lock when I did this. I do not think the motors will do this on the basic models, but would be pleased if they do.

They will not fold when the ignition is turned off (or when the car is locked), but they can be folded by either the knob inside or keeping the remote pressed then they fold.

Yes they can also be folded manually

The manual advises not to manually fold electric mirrors as it can damage the motor.

So we use both methods - SWMBO used the internal knob to fold in & out,  I prefer using the key.

I do really think that they should fold when you lock with either key or touching door handle with kessy, & open when the car is actually started, none of this messing about with the interior knob.

Would love to know how they can be folded automatically when locking normally via remote, i.e. NOT by holding the lock button down for 2 seconds.

But would echo Steve's comment above - if you have a folding motor on the mirror, it's not a good idea at all to fold them by hand because you're forcing them and manually moving the mechanism.

The manual, FL page 60 Caution, says not to fold them manually.

What about the safety clutch that allows the mirror to fold back when struck by a pedestrian or hedge or whatever? My old X-Trail used to be nudged closed frequently round our lanes when I wasn't quick enough with the knob. Surely more-modern mechanisms are as tolerant?

When I changed the puddle lights for LED’s they folded forwards (from the normal driving position) with no motor resistance, I have not tried to fold them in against the motor though, neither would it be a good idea.
