Changing Bonnet and Boot Badges

Featured Replies

Morning all,

Am a proud new owner of a 2006 Octavia VRS - the car's in pretty good condition but I've got one or two things that I want to sort out. A previous owner has changed the bonnet and boot badges; I prefer the oem look so have ordered a set of the original emblems from my local Skoda dealer.

I want to try and get the current badges off making as little mess as possible - am I right in thinking that heating with a hair-dryer and running a length of fishing line behind them should cut through the adhesive? Is it the same procedure for the bonnet badge as the boot?

Finally, what solvent works best to get the residue from the adhesive off before sticking the new badges on? - I reckon that isopropyl alcohol should do the job but I don't want to damage the lacquer!

Thanks,

Alexander

from what im reliably told there are 2 little pins on the back of the badges that may make the fishing line trick harder,  ive not yet tried it so this is only guess work lol im sure others will let you know if this will work and ill be watching to find out too lol

That method will work to a point, as it'll give you enough leverage to pull the badges off. If you're replacing them you're obviously not worried about damaging them, so get them off just enough to pull them off and then just go for it!

Heating them up is certainly a good idea. A bit of white spirit can help soften things too, plus help clean up afterwards.

Reporting back having got the new badges today from the Skoda dealer. The previous set on the car were just gel badges - they peeled off very easily after having applied some heat. Isopropanol worked really well at removing any of the remaining adhesive residue - all I then had to do was peel the backing off the new badges and stick them down. There are two pegs on the back that ensure they are properly lined up.

That was good - what was not so good was a Tech at the Skoda dealer noticing that the car is missing the rear crash bar after asking him to have a look at a part of the rear bumper which doesn't line up properly with the rest of the body. I've found the part off an eBay salvage company and booked it in for fitting - hopefully it's just missing after having had a tow bar fitted and some point later removed, rather than having a twisted rear end from a crash!

The front badge is 3U0853621BMEL and the rear badge is 1U0853621CMEL - together they came to £31.92 including VAT.

Note that these are the older style badges with the green emblem  - the current purely silver badges will have different part numbers. All the dealer needed to know was my vehicle registration and they were able to find the correct parts from that.
