Why does my octy vrs struggle to start and blow black smoke sometimes?

Featured Replies

Recently my octy vrs has been giving me starting problems, somedays it will take 3 turns of the key to start it and when it starts the revs won't settle and it misfires and after 30 seconds blows black smoke but after a few revs it clears up but gives of an eggy smell… I think it's something to do with the temperature coolant sensor that goes on the water flange into the block of the engine as sometime it will play up in the moe if somedays it does it straight after parking it go 5 minz.

Any ideas?

Replace the CTS with genuine revised green VAG CTS.

A diagnostic scan might provide some clues.

ECU getting the wrong temp from the CTS so overfueling.

You cannot rely on fault codes for the CTS as the ECU will only throw a code if the CTS shorts to ground or becomes intermittent. If you have access to VCDS you could have a look in engine measuring blocks to see what temp the ECU is getting. If you have the old black type CTS I'd change it regardless as they always fail eventually.

Yeah that makes sense because at first straight after turning it off and starting it again it would be on choke even when warm and would give off some extra smoke, and I've had it on the scanner many times over the 7 months I've had it and the coolant temperature sensor only comes up from time to time, plus my temp gauge is always off! So yeah I'm guessing the CTS is nackered

Thermostat could also be screwed
